Practice report: Ryan Tannehill reportedly on the other side of Florida as Miami Dolphins hold 2nd day of training camp

The Dolphins are holding their second practice of training camp this morning, but their franchise quarterback is reportedly across the state in Bradenton.

Ryan Tannehill, still squabbling with the Dolphins over ?offset language? in his contract, has checked into IMG Academies to train with former Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke, according to ESPN?s Chris Mortensen. Weinke, the director of football operations at IMG?s Madden Football Academy, also trained Cam Newton during last year?s lockout.

According to the report, Tannehill brought his Dolphins iPad playbook with him, and ?has a full staff of strength and conditioning coaches, a performance coach and a certified athletics trainer at his disposal.?

Meanwhile, back in Davie, today will be David Garrard?s turn to work with the first-team offense, after Matt Moore got the snaps yesterday.

Below, we have the live updates from practice at the top, followed by post-practice quotes from several players and coach Joe Philbin:

* Brian Hartline took a couple reps with the first team offense today, after playing mostly with the twos on Friday, but the top three receivers still appear to be Chad Johnson, Legedu Naanee and Davone Bess. Julius Pruitt got some looks in four-WR sets, and he and Roberto Wallace are clearly the fifth and sixth guys right now. Hartline didn?t really practice on Saturday and is clearly still dealing with the after-effects of his appendectomy from this summer.

* Garrard connects with Pruitt on a really nice 25-yard seam route with Vontae Davis and Tyrone Culver in coverage. Crowd goes wild.

* Chris Clemons, hobbled all last season by a hamstring injury, is sitting out this practice with some sort of right leg injury (he?s wearing a compression sleeve). Culver and Jimmy Wilson replace him at free safety.

* Charles Clay looks FAST when catching and running. This guy is going to be lining up all over the field.

* Hartline and Clemons have completely removed themselves from practice and are now working with a trainer off to the side.

* Artis Hicks continues to work as the starting right guard, John Jerry is working with the second team and Eric Steinbach is at left guard with the second team. TE Jeron Mastrud is also getting reps with the first team offense, along with Anthony Fasano and Charles Clay.

* In 11 on 11 drills, Richard Marshall, not Vontae Davis, is paired up with Sean Smith at cornerback. And Jimmy Wilson is lined up at free safety in Clemons? spot.

* Garrard does a really nice job of avoiding the rush and floating a perfect pass to Charles Clay for a big game, just over the out-stretched arms of Jimmy Wilson. But it may have been a sack in real football. But Garrard can?t connect with Reggie Bush on a screen pass, floating the ball a little too high.

* Couple of bad drops by Daniel Thomas and Jerome Messam in passing drills. Messam needs to have an excellent camp to beat out Steve Slaton for the fourth tailback spot.

* Speaking of Slaton, he limped off the field with a trainer toward the end of practice. Curious to see if this is a cramp or something more serious.

* Garrard threw a beautiful deep sideline pass to Chad Johnson, while Moore threaded the needle perfectly to Chris Hogan down the seam. Johnson also drew a nice pass interference penalty on Jimmy Wilson.

* Second-round pick Jonathan Martin, plugged in as the starting right tackle, needs to work on his jump off the ball. Saw him false start at least two times today, probably more.

* Richard Marshall took a couple of reps as the outside cornerback instead of Vontae Davis, and rookie Olivier Vernon took a few of Cam Wake?s snaps.

* The Dolphins will put on the pads for the first time on Sunday after going through a ?climatization period? for the first two days of camp. Joe Philbin anticipates having his players put on pads for most practices, but ?I doubt you?ll see us in pads for three hours straight in practice, so we?re going to pick our spots.?

* Roberto Wallace and Julius Pruitt have been getting a lot of buzz to be the final receivers to make the roster, and Philbin has noticed them, too. ?I think they?ve caught the ball very well,? he said. ?You watch them run around the practice field they?re the first guys in their drills, they?re hustling. I love their attitude. We?ll see as the camp unfolds, but I think those two guys definitely have a future.?

* Pruitt, entering his fourth season out of tiny Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) College, wants to catch touchdowns and be a star receiver, but understands that excelling on special teams is his best way of making the roster. ?It?s all about finding your role, and if that?s my role, I?m gonna be the best at it,? he said.

* New guard Eric Steinbach has almost exclusively played left guard throughout his eight-year career with Cincinnati and Cleveland, and has been playing left guard with the second team through two days of training camp. But the Dolphins? hole is at right guard, and Steinbach, who missed all of 2011 following back surgery, is willing to play anywhere on the line. ?You put the best five up front,? he said Saturday, ?and as long as I?m healthy and getting the system down, I feel confident that I?m one of the best five.?

'Big Night' chosen for benefit screening at Taste; win tickets - Table ...

Table Hopping readers chose the 1996 film ?Big Night? to be screened at Cinema Under the Stars, a fundraiser for the Times Union Hope Fund that is being held the evening of Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Taste restaurant in downtown Albany. (The rain date is Aug. 21.)

Seating for dinner and cocktails begins at 5 p.m. There will be movie-themed food and drink specials. The screening, to be held on Taste?s rear terrace, will begin at approximately 8 p.m. Ruth Fantasia, the Times Union?s former food editor and dining critic, and I will be guest bartenders.

?Big Night,? co-written and co-directed by co-star Stanley Tucci, tells the story of a pair of immigrant brothers who open an Italian restaurant in New Jersey in the 1950s.

Admission to the movie is $5, and screening reservations are required; make them here. A portion of the proceeds from the evening will go to the Hope Fund, which works to provide philanthropic support to Capital Region after-school and summer programs.

I have a pair of tickets to give away for the screening. Apple To Take Twitter Stake? Nope, Apparently Not

Well, that was fun while it lasted.

The New York Times last week got the Valley all a-titter with a report that Apple?in recent months had held talks to take a stake in Twitter.

But Bloomberg reported over the weekend that in fact Apple is NOT in active talks with Twitter. The story is attributed to ?two people familiar with the matter.? Actually, the Times story says that the two sides are not in negotiations at the moment, but went on to suggest that the talks could point to a closer relationship between the two companies.

Bloomberg asserts that the two companies held talks more than a year ago but never reached ?any agreement. The Times had reported that the companies had held talks in recent months about Apple making an investment in the hundreds of millions of dollars that would would have valued Twitter at more than $10 billion.

The two stories agree on several basic points: the two sides talked, no agreement was reached, and they aren?t currently talking about a deal. What?s irritating about the Times story is the way it was positioned, with a headline reading ?Apple Officials Said to Consider Stake in Twitter,? and then a story that says that no talks are actually taking place.?

KING CRIMSON Discipline music review by rogerthat

5 stars Before I get to the review proper, I have to get some background info out of the way. Discipline may have been a rebirth of the King Crimson vehicle which Robert Fripp had seemingly abandoned for good in 1974 (ha!) but it is no ITCOTCK-esque revolution. Bill Bruford once said that you can hear the future of music on a King Crimson album, but on Discipline you can hear its immediate past. Talking Heads and Peter Gabriel, most notably. I don't think the fact that Fripp also contributed guitar solos to Talking Heads makes it his work instead of theirs and to that extent, the sometimes hyperbolic claims made about the originality of this album seem hard to relate to.

With that told, I have to say that Discipline is still an incredible exhibition of musicianship presented in infectious and palatable slices of new wave/rock. When Fripp called time on King Crimson and heavily criticized the 70s rock scene, which he felt was excessive, he had also advocated the "small, smart, self-sufficient, mobile unit". And you cannot say about Fripp that he didn't/doesn't walk the talk - at least not in this connection. Small, smart units of prog is exactly what we get on Discipline. It took 7 years and the introduction of two new musicians in the lineup, but Fripp lived up to his boast.

And not only is Discipline small and smart in its approach, it also overflows with contagious energy of the kind that was sorely missing in prog by the end of the 70s. Where Dave Stewart apparently chose to blast the emergence of supposedly illiterate musicians riding on the 'lack' of talent, Fripp & co deliver to listeners what they had perhaps been missing in the interim.

This is not music that requires a quiet room and high powers of concentration to focus on and appreciate. It leaps out of the stereo and grabs you by the collar, wasting no time in getting across its point. The new wave-ish stylistic orientation masks the astounding level of musicianship on this album. This is a hard enough set of songs to play without having to emulate the energy with which the musicians project it. Thela Hun Gunjeet is on a King Crimson album? You've got to be kidding me. Its riffs hook you in a matter of seconds in ways unthinkable of the earlier avatar of King Crimson.

Even though Discipline is largely a tightly composed affair with next to no room for improvised sections, it doesn't feel like it at all. King Crimson's previous attempts to marry composition with improvisation, incredible as they were, had a studied and calculated air about it. Discipline has an intrinsic spontaneity about it and is a bit silly and quirky, at least by King Crimson standards.

A good measure of credit, or blame depending on the way you see it, for this new found quirk must go to singer and guitarist Adrian Belew. Previous King Crimson vocalists like Lake and Wetton sang the lines relatively neatly with their powerful voices without much by way of a distinct style or trait. Belew's style of singing on the other hand is very distinct, even if it might not be everyone's cup of tea, and lends the album an unique character (not unlike the way Byrne does to Talking Heads).

A minor gripe I have is the album seems to find its magic formula early on and sticks to it to the point where it overstays its welcome a wee bit. Also, the two attempts to break out of the formula, Matte Kudasai and Sheltering Sky, produce mixed results. I think Sheltering Sky might have fared a bit better with me had the tones been a little more to my liking. Matte Kudasai is kind of overwrought and cheesy but not particularly bad and it will pass.

That aside, there's not much more to find fault with in this remarkable effort by an outstanding incarnation of King Crimson. It seems almost too much like stating the obvious to say that it is one of the essentials of 80s music.

Syria: as violence escalates, UN human rights chief warns of ...

27 July 2012 ?

Expressing ?deep alarm? over the increased threat to civilians in Syria, the United Nations human rights chief today urged the country?s Government and armed opposition to protect civilians and abide by their obligations under international human rights and humanitarian law ? or face the consequences.

?The Government has the prime responsibility to protect civilians from all forms of violence,? the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Navi Pillay, said in a news release. ?While Government forces have on some occasions, in accordance with international humanitarian law, given civilians a clear opportunity to leave areas it is attacking, on other occasions it has not. Effective warning is required by international humanitarian law.?

?Civilians and civilian objects ? including homes and other property, businesses, schools and places of worship ? must be protected at all times. All parties, including the Government and opposition forces, must ensure that they distinguish between civilian and military targets,? she added.

Syria has been wracked by violence, with more than 10,000 people, mostly civilians, killed since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began some 16 months ago. Over recent days, there have been reports of an escalation in violence in many towns and villages, as well as the country?s two biggest cities, Damascus and Aleppo.

Ms. Pillay expressed particular concern about the likelihood of an imminent major confrontation in Aleppo, Syria?s second largest city after the capital, Damascus.

?I have been receiving as yet unconfirmed reports of atrocities, including extra-judicial killings and shooting of civilians by snipers, that took place during the recent fighting in various suburbs of Damascus,? she said. ?It goes without saying that the increasing use of heavy weapons, tanks, attack helicopters and ? reportedly ? even jet fighters in urban areas has already caused many civilian casualties and is putting many more at grave risk.?

She noted that the consequences for civilians have been devastating, with between one and 1.5 million reported to have fled their homes, in addition to those killed and injured.

The High Commissioner said ?a discernible pattern has emerged? as Government forces try to clear areas it says are occupied by opposition forces.

?Typically, during the initial stages, after a village or urban district has been surrounded, water, electricity and food supplies are cut. This is followed by intense shelling and bombardment by a variety of weaponry, increasingly with air support from attack helicopters, and now reportedly even jet aircraft. Then tanks move in, followed by ground forces who proceed door-to-door and reportedly often summarily execute people they suspect of being opposition fighters, although sometimes they detain them,? she said. ?The bodies of those executed or otherwise killed are then sometimes burned or taken away.?

Ms. Pillay also said she had had also been receiving an increasing number of reports of opposition fighters torturing or executing prisoners.

?Murder and wilful killing, whether committed by government or opposition forces, may constitute crimes against humanity or war crimes. Torture, likewise, is prohibited under all circumstances,? she said. ?While such conclusions can only ultimately be reached in a court of law, it is my belief, on the basis of evidence gathered from various credible sources, that crimes against humanity and war crimes have been, and continue to be, committed in Syria.?

?Those who are committing them should not believe that they will escape justice. The world does not forget or forgive crimes like these,? she added. ?This applies to opposition forces committing crimes as well as to Government forces and their allies.?

Now the NCAA gets its say on Penn State.

College sports' governing body was expected to deal a series of heavy blows to the Nittany Lions football program on Monday, less than two weeks after a devastating report accused coach Joe Paterno and other top university officials of concealing child sex abuse allegations against a retired assistant coach for years to avoid bad publicity. A news conference was scheduled for 9 a.m. in Indianapolis.

A multi-year bowl ban, lost scholarships, recruiting limits, probation and a multimillion-dollar fine all seem likely for the program Paterno built into a national power under the slogan of "success with honor." And the NCAA, heavily criticized for its sometimes-ponderous pace in deciding penalties as scandals mounted at Ohio State, Auburn, USC and elsewhere, acted with unprecedented swiftness in arriving at what it called "corrective and punitive" sanctions for a team that is trying to start over with a new coach and a new outlook.

The NCAA announced no details Sunday in serving notice that it would indeed weigh in on perhaps the worst scandal in American college sports history. President Mark Emmert cautioned last week that he had not ruled out the possibility of shutting down the football program altogether ? the so-called death penalty, famously used against Southern Methodist a quarter-century ago ? saying he had "never seen anything as egregious" as the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

The NCAA announcement Sunday came shortly after Penn State took down its famed statue of Paterno, six months to the day since his death from lung cancer. The university said leaving it up would be a "recurring wound" for Sandusky's victims. An accomplished defensive coordinator, Sandusky was convicted of molesting young boys over more than a decade.

A harsh penalty from the NCAA could have repercussions well beyond Penn State's football program, which generates large profits ? more than $50 million, according to the U.S. Department of Education ? that subsidize dozens of other sports at the school. The potential for a historic NCAA penalty also is worrisome for a region where the economy is built at least partially on the strength and popularity of the football program.

Kayla Weaver, a Penn State senior and member of the dance team called the Lionettes, said an NCAA death penalty would not only make football players transfer, but it also would force program changes for cheerleaders, dancers and band members, and would hurt season-ticket holders.

"It could ruin everything that we've built here," said Weaver, from Franklin Lakes, N.J.

Added Derek Leonard, a 31-year-old university construction project coordinator who grew up in the area: "It's going to kill our town."

Emmert put the Penn State matter on the fast track. Other cases that were strictly about violating the NCAA rulebook have dragged on for months and even years. There was no sign that the infractions committee so familiar to college sports fans was involved this time around as Emmert moved quickly, no doubt aided by the July 12 release of the report by former FBI director Louis Freeh and what it said about Paterno and the rest of the Penn State leadership.

The investigation focused partly on university officials' decision not to go to child-welfare authorities in 2001 after a coaching assistant told Paterno that he had seen Sandusky sexually abusing a boy in the locker room showers. Penn State officials already knew about a previous allegation against Sandusky by that time, from 1998.

The leaders, the report said, "repeatedly concealed critical facts relating to Sandusky's child abuse from authorities, the university's board of trustees, the Penn State community and the public at large."

Sandusky is awaiting sentencing after being convicted last month of sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years.

Emmert had warned Penn State last fall that the NCAA would be examining the "exercise of institutional control" within the athletic department, and said it was clear that "deceitful and dishonest behavior" could be considered a violation of ethics rules. So, too, could a failure to exhibit moral values or adhere to ethics guidelines.

The Freeh report also said school had "decentralized and uneven" oversight of compliance issues ? laws, regulations, policies and procedures ? as required by the NCAA.

Recent major scandals, such as improper payments to the family of Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush while he was at Southern California, and players at Ohio State trading memorabilia for cash and tattoos, have resulted in bowl bans and the loss of scholarships.

Current NCAA rules limit the so-called "death penalty" to colleges already on probation that commit another major violation. That was the case when SMU had its program suspended in the mid-80s, the last time the punishment was imposed on a major college football program.

NCAA leaders have indicated in recent months they are willing to return to harsher penalties for the worst offenses.

"This is completely different than an impermissible benefits scandal like (what) happened at SMU, or anything else we've dealt with. This is as systemic a cultural problem as it is a football problem. There have been people that said this wasn't a football scandal," Emmert told PBS recently. "It was that but much more. And we'll have to figure out exactly what the right penalties are. I don't know that past precedent makes particularly good sense in this case because it's really an unprecedented problem."

Another question was whether Penn State ? and, by extension, Paterno, major college football's winningest coach ? would have any of his victories thrown out. Paterno won 409 games for the school in his 46 seasons as head coach.

As Penn State awaited its fate, construction workers removed the larger-than-life monument of its Hall of Fame coach. The Paterno family released a statement criticizing Penn State's decision to remove the statue, saying it was made in haste and before all the facts about Paterno's role in the Sandusky scandal were known.

The bronze statue, weighing more than 900 pounds, was erected in 2001 in honor of Paterno's record-setting 324th Division I coaching victory and his "contributions to the university." Penn State President Rodney Erickson said he decided the sculpture had to come down because it "has become a source of division and an obstacle to healing."

International AIDS Conference Returns to U.S. with Much Remaining Undone

So much changed in a 22-year span since the conference was last held in the U.S. that its return effectively marks a new phase in the epidemic in terms of treatment, prevention, funding and death rates

Late Sunday afternoon, less than a mile from the White House, the U.S. will witness something that it has not seen in 22 years: the opening of an International AIDS Conference.

The meeting, which this year is expected to draw about 25,000 scientists, activists and celebrities, has been held abroad for two decades because in 1987 the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a measure preventing anyone with known HIV infection from entering the country. At the time, the gathering?launched in 1985, four years after the first recognition of cases in the U.S.?alternated every year between U.S. and foreign locations. The 1990 conference in San Francisco, the first held after the rule was finalized, was gravely disrupted by thousands of delegates who stayed away?so much so that Harvard University, set to be the next U.S. host, announced it would withdraw its sponsorship unless the ban was lifted. It was not. The 1992 conference moved instead to Amsterdam, and the annual meeting stayed away until President Barack Obama lifted the travel ban in late 2009.

So much changed in that 22-year span that the conference?s return effectively marks a truly new phase in the epidemic. The latest report from UNAIDS, the United Nations agency that monitors the global epidemic, backs up the sense that things are changing. The report, released Wednesday, found that among the 34.2 million people living with HIV, fewer are dying: There were 1.7 million deaths last year worldwide, compared to 1.8 million the year before and a peak of 2.3 million in 2005. At the same time, the report said, new infections are declining too, by almost 20 percent in the past 10 years.

Simultaneously, after many years of disappointments, research is returning hopeful results for both prevention and treatment. Three years ago, scientists reported the first promising findings in the search for an HIV vaccine, considered the key to global eradication. Two years ago, researchers published the first partially successful trials of both a microbicide and a drug cocktail that may prevent infection. Last year, a nine-country trial demonstrated that getting infected people into treatment very quickly can keep them from passing the disease along. And since 2007, scientists have been closely watching the "progress of the ?Berlin patient"?the only person, out of 60 million believed to have been infected in more than 30 years, who appears to have been cured of HIV.

The situation now is so different from 1990?when AIDS was a fast-moving, terrifying and invariably fatal disease, as captured in the new documentary How To Survive A Plague?that two HIV researchers writing in this week?s New England Journal of Medicine daringly titled their editorial: "The Beginning of the End of AIDS?"

For anyone who remembers HIV's apocalyptic arrival?I?m one of them, and lost many friends in the early days?the current moment feels as major a shift as 1996, when multi-drug cocktails came to market and people visibly on the verge of death recovered in ways that seemed miraculous. A friend quipped then that it was the first time in 15 years he could take his florist off speed-dial.

And yet: Major challenges remain, and in many ways the perception of AIDS as a chronic disease may make them harder to tackle.

Obama offers comfort after Colorado shooting

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? President Barack Obama on Sunday sought again to provide comfort to hurting and grieving families, sweeping into Colorado to privately console relatives of the victims gunned down in a movie theater. The massacre left 12 people dead, dozens injured and a nation in stunned sorrow.

Air Force One touched down at Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora late Sunday afternoon for the Obama's hastily arranged 2?-hour visit.

A short time later, Obama began his visit with the family members at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, which treated 23 of the people injured in the mass shooting; 10 remain there, seven hurt critically. The hospital is a short drive from the site of the shooting.

Obama was expected to make a statement to the press later Sunday night.

For a president nearing the end of his term and seeking a second one, it was another grim occasion for him to serve as national consoler in chief, a role that has become a crucial facet of the job. National tragedies can present an opportunity for presidents to show leadership and rise above partisan politics, as with President Bill Clinton and the Oklahoma City bombing and President George W. Bush and the Sept. 11 attacks.

But in moments of sorrow, presidents can risk looking detached and out of touch. Bush's handling of Hurricane Katrina is an often-cited example.

Obama was accompanied at the hospital by Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan.

A single suspect, James Holmes, is being held without bond on suspicion of multiple counts of first-degree murder after the shooting rampage, which occurred minutes into a premiere of "The Dark Knight Rises" early Friday in this suburb outside Denver.

Sunday's trip was Obama's second time to Colorado in less than a month to comfort residents in a state that's critical to the November election. He made a quick visit in late June to Colorado Springs, where hundreds of homes were destroyed in the most devastating wildfire in the state's history.

"These families need that kind of contact by our elected leader," Oates told CBS' "Face the Nation." ''It will be very powerful and it will help them. As awful as what they've been through and what they're going through has been, having the president here is very, very powerful."

"I think the president coming in is a wonderful gesture," Hogan said on ABC's "This Week." ''He's coming in, really, to have private conversations with the families. I think that's totally appropriate."

Obama already had been a frequent election-year visitor to Colorado, which he won by more than 8 percentage points over Republican John McCain four years ago. But neither Obama's nor GOP challenger Mitt Romney's camp expects that big a margin this time. Recent polls place Obama's lead inside the margin of error.

The shock of the mass shooting brought the presidential campaign to a standstill for the weekend. Obama cut short a political trip to Florida to return to Washington and Romney canceled interviews. Both campaigns pulled ads off the air in Colorado out of respect for the victims.

"This weekend I hope everyone takes some time for prayer and reflection," Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address, "for the victims of this terrible tragedy, for the people who knew them and loved them, for those who are still struggling to recover."

Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Sunday during a briefing on Air Force One that the Obama campaign will keep its television ads off the air in Colorado through the whole week.

Psaki said the campaign canceled a grassroots event scheduled for Portland, Ore., Tuesday in part because resources had to be diverted to Colorado for the president's trip. She said it was appropriate to cancel the grassroots rally because of the tone of that type of campaign event.

But some election activities were to resume Monday.

From Colorado, Obama was to fly to San Francisco to start a previously scheduled three-day campaign trip that includes a speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Reno, Nev., fundraisers in California, Oregon and Washington state, and a speech to the National Urban League convention in New Orleans.

Romney is scheduled to address the VFW Tuesday.

The task of articulating sorrow and loss has become a familiar one for Obama.

In November 2009, he led mourners at a service for victims of the mass shooting at Texas' Fort Hood. In January 2011, he spoke at a memorial for the six victims killed in Tucson, Ariz., when a gunman attacked Rep. Gabrielle Giffords as she met with constituents.

The following April, when some 300 people were killed in a multistate series of tornadoes, Obama flew to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to commiserate with residents whose homes were in ruins. A month later, Obama went to Joplin, Mo., after a monster twister claimed 161 lives. This year, he came back on the storm's anniversary to give a commencement speech at Joplin High School.

News guide to the Colorado movie theater massacre

Here's a guide to some key questions in the wake of the mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater during a showing of "The Dark Knight Rises."

Q: WHAT HAPPENED?

A: Shortly after midnight Friday, a gunman wearing a gas mask and black SWAT gear set off two gas canisters and then opened fire inside a crowded theater in the Denver suburb of Aurora, Colo., killing 12 people and wounding nearly 60 others, authorities said. The suspect was arrested near a car behind the theater and identified as 24-year-old James Holmes. Authorities have not released a motive.

___

Q: WHO IS THE SUSPECT?

A: Holmes was studying neuroscience in a Ph.D. program at the University of Colorado-Denver. He enrolled in June 2011 but left a year later, though it wasn't immediately clear why.

He played soccer at Westview High School in the San Diego area and graduated with honors from the University of California, Riverside, in spring 2010 with a bachelor's degree in neuroscience.

Those who knew Holmes described him as a shy, intelligent man who grew up in San Diego with parents who were active in their well-to-do suburban neighborhood.

___

Q: WHAT IS GOING ON AT HOLMES' APARTMENT?

A: Police disarmed trip wires and explosive devices that authorities said were "set up to kill" people inside Holmes' third-floor apartment. Federal authorities detonated one small explosive and disarmed another, but several other explosive devices remained, Aurora police Sgt. Cassidee Carlson said Saturday.

Authorities are hoping to find clues to his motive without destroying key evidence in a blast.

Police have evacuated surrounding buildings.

The apartment is about four miles from the theater.

___

Q: ARE MOVIE THEATERS STILL SHOWING THE FILM?

A: Yes, though with increased security. AMC Theaters, the nation's second-largest chain, barred customers from wearing masks or costumes.

Also, in a rare show of solidarity, Hollywood studios delayed their weekend box-office reporting because of the shootings. Sony, Fox, Disney, Universal and Lionsgate said Saturday that they were joining "Dark Knight Rises" distributor Warner Bros. in withholding their box-office numbers for the weekend.

The film was expected to be among the most lucrative movie openings, but that now appears unlikely. However, Hollywood trade publications Variety and Hollywood Reporter reported estimates of roughly $75 million to $77 million for the film on Friday, based on box-office insiders. That would put it on track for somewhere around $165 million for the weekend. Such a total would be the second highest weekend opening ever, after "The Avengers" brought in $207.4 million.

___

Q: WHO WAS HURT IN THE THEATER?

A: Many victims treated at hospitals were under 40, including a 4-month-old baby and 6-year-old. The oldest reported patient was 45.

Victims were treated for chemical exposure, apparently related to the canisters thrown by the gunman, and gunshot and shrapnel wounds. Eleven remain in critical condition.

The Defense Department said a sailor died in the shooting, and two sailors and an airman were wounded.

Also among the slain were a sports blogger who recently wrote about surviving a shooting in Canada, a man preparing to celebrate his first wedding anniversary and a 23-year-old woman whose death announcement brought heartbreak, yet closure, to her family who agonizingly had to wait for the news.

___

Q: WAS THERE ANY LINK BETWEEN THE SHOOTING AND THE MOVIE?

A: It's unclear. New York City's police commissioner said he was told the gunman had painted his hair red and called himself the Joker ? Batman's nemesis ? but Aurora police would not confirm that.

In "The Dark Knight Rises," a masked villain leads a murderous crew into a packed football stadium and wages an attack involving guns and explosives. But violent attacks on the public by villains are key components of most superhero movies.

There are general parallels to the shooting, "The Dark Knight" and the comic book character. Bruce Wayne's drive to become Batman arose from witnessing the deaths of his parents at the hands of small-time criminal who shot and killed them after they had left a movie theater. The Batman video game called "Arkham City" takes place in an abandoned movie theater.

___

Q: HOW MANY GUNS DID THE SUSPECT HAVE?

A: Officers found an AR-15 assault rifle ? the civilian form of the M-16 ? a Remington 12-gauge shotgun and a .40-caliber Glock handgun in the theater and another identical handgun in the car. The gunman also set off two devices that released a smoke or an irritant, Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said.

___

Q: WHEN WAS THE LAST MASS SHOOTING IN THE U.S.?

A: The massacre in Aurora was one of the deadliest in the U.S., and the worst mass shooting in the U.S. since the Nov. 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas, when an Army psychiatrist killed 13 soldiers and civilians and more than two dozen others wounded.

In Colorado, it was the deadliest shooting since the Columbine High School massacre on April 20, 1999, when two students opened fire at the school in the Denver suburb of Littleton, killing 12 classmates and a teacher and wounding 26 others before killing themselves.
