John Downer Lambert, Jr., known to most of us as J.D., passed from this life on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012, at the age of 102.? J.D. was born in Sontag, Mississippi, on April 1, 1910.? When he was 4, his family moved to Louisiana, then Port Arthur, and eventually settled in Corpus Christi, where he grew up on the family farm.? ?J.D. served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, then married Doris Carlson on March 12, 1946 and brought her home to Texas, where they spent 65 happy years together.? He was a farmer in Batesville, TX, for many years, and after retirement, moved to San Marcos, where he became bored with retirement, bought a small farm, and taught his son-in-law, Billy, how to be a farmer as well.? J.D. lived a life full of love and laughter, always with a positive outlook, for over a century.? He was a devoted member of First Lutheran Church in San Marcos.
J.D. is survived by his daughter & son-in-law, Chris & Billy Cooper of San Marcos.? He is also survived by three granddaughters, Starr (Jesse) Flores of San Antonio, Joya Cooper of Austin, and Lily Cooper of San Marcos; also three great-grandchildren, Brodie Romero, Vicente Esquivel, and Roy Louis Garcia, all of San Marcos.? J.D. was also blessed with many, many wonderful nieces & nephews who loved and cared for him throughout his life.? He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Doris, his parents John D. Lambert, Sr. & Polly Ann Reid, his son William Lambert, and by his 10 brothers and sisters.
The family would like to express sincere thanks to J.D.?s family at First Lutheran Church; also to Mark and Dolores of Jacob?s Home, and New Century Hospice, all of whom cared for him during the last chapter of his life.? Visitation is at Pennington Funeral Home on Monday, August 6, 5-7pm.? Services are at First Lutheran Church Tuesday morning, August 7, at 10am.? In lieu of flowers, for those who choose, memorial gifts can be made in J.D?s name to First Lutheran Church, 130 W. Holland St., San Marcos.?
