Spanish jobless queue grows in August

Spain's jobless queue grew to 4.63 million people in August, the government said Tuesday, grim news for an economy suffering nearly 25-percent unemployment.

Snapping a run of four monthly declines, the number of job seekers in August climbed by 38,179, or 0.83 percent, from July, the Labour Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry's monthly tally is based on the number of people registering as unemployed.

A broader, quarterly household survey by the National Statistics Institute provides the official unemployment rate, which hit 24.63 percent in the second quarter of 2012, the highest in the industrialized world.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's conservative Popular Party government has declared unemployment and economic growth its priorities even as it slashes costs in the midst of recession.

The government agreed last month to extend the life of a 400-euro ($500) monthly payment for jobless people whose unemployment benefits come to an end.

Regular unemployment benefits last a maximum of two years in Spain depending on how long a worker has made social security contributions.

The benefit will be raised to 450 euros for recipients who have a dependant spouse or partner and at least two children, the deputy premier said.

The payment is a lifeline to many people, with official data showing 1.74 million households with no member in work.

Researchers at Rice, Tel Aviv and Johns Hopkins universities aim to break cancer's codes for social networking

HOUSTON -- (Sept. 4, 2012) -- In the face of mounting evidence that cancer cells communicate, cooperate and even engage in collective decision-making, biophysicists and cancer researchers at Rice University, Tel Aviv University and Johns Hopkins University are suggesting a new strategy for outsmarting cancer through its own social intelligence.

"We need to get beyond the notion that cancer is a random collection of cells running amok," said Herbert Levine, co-director of Rice's Center for Theoretical Biological Physics (CTBP) and co-author of the cover article in this week's Trends in Microbiology that pulls together dozens of recent discoveries about the social behavior of cancer cells. "These cells lead sophisticated social lives."

Article co-author Eshel Ben-Jacob, a senior investigator at CTBP, said, "Cancer is a sophisticated enemy. There's growing evidence that cancer cells use advanced communications to work together to enslave normal cells, create metastases, resist drugs and decoy the body's immune system."

Ben-Jacob, Levine and Donald Coffey, a noted cancer researcher at Johns Hopkins, suggest in the article that cancer researchers act like modern generals and go after their enemy's command, control and communication capabilities. The article is in volume 20, issue 9, pages 403-410 of the journal.

"It's time to declare a cyber war on cancer," said Ben-Jacob, who, along with Coffey, is speaking today at a workshop titled "Failures in Clinical Treatment of Cancer" at Princeton University.

Ben-Jacob said cancer cells have been shown to cooperate to elude chemotherapy drugs, much like bacteria that communicate and act as a team to resist attacks from antibiotics. He said some cancers appear to sense when chemotherapy drugs are present and sound an alarm that causes cells throughout a tumor to switch into a dormant state. Similar signals are later used to sound the "all clear" and reawaken cells inside the tumor.

"If we can break the communication code, we may be able to prevent the cells from going dormant or to reawaken them for a well-timed chemotherapeutic attack," Ben-Jacob said. "This is just one example. Our extensive studies of the social lives of bacteria suggest a number of others, including sending signals that trigger the cancer cells to turn upon themselves and kill one another."

The article cites numerous examples of similarities between the behavior of bacterial colonies and cancerous tumors.

"The parallels between the communal behaviors of bacteria and cancer cells suggest that bacteria can serve as a valuable model system for studying cancer," said Coffey, professor of urology, oncology, pathology and pharmacology and molecular sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "We believe this approach could be particularly valuable for investigating intractable problems like metastasis, relapse and multiple drug resistance."

Levine, Rice's Karl F. Hasselmann Professor in Bioengineering, and fellow CTBP co-director Jos Onuchic were recruited to Houston last year, thanks in part to a grant from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) that was designed to spur new thinking about cancer and foster collaborations between CTBP scientists and cancer specialists in the Texas Medical Center.

"This opinion article reflects the multidisciplinary strategy of the CTBP -- to communicate and work together with researchers across disciplines for solving the biomedical challenges of our time," said Onuchic, Rice's Harry C. and Olga K. Wiess Professor of Physics and Astronomy and professor of chemistry.

Ben-Jacob, the Maguy-Glass Chair in Physics of Complex Systems and professor of physics and astronomy at Tel Aviv University, worked previously with Levine and Onuchic on a number of groundbreaking studies about the underlying biophysics of bacterial social behavior. He joined Rice University this summer as senior investigator of the CTBP and adjunct professor of chemistry and cell biology.

(AP) ? Jurors at Drew Peterson's murder trial withdrew Wednesday to begin deliberations on whether the former Illinois police sergeant murdered his third wife.

Peterson, 58, pleaded not guilty to murdering Kathleen Savio in 2004. The 58-year-old was only charged only after his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, disappeared in 2007.

Judge Edward Burmila read 15 minutes of jury instructions to the panelists before they filed out to elect a foreman and then begin wading through five weeks of circumstantial and hearsay evidence.

He told them they should go in with the presumption that Peterson is innocent ? and convict him only if they find him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

"The defendant is not required to prove his innocence," he told them.

The jurors withdrew to a jury room Wednesday morning after a judge read them instructions on how to assess the five weeks of testimony.

Peterson is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in Savio's death. If convicted, he faces a maximum 60-year prison sentence.

Peterson's attorneys said Tuesday their client has braced himself for jurors' decision.

"He's emotionally and mentally prepared for whatever happens," his lead attorney, Joel Brodsy, told reporters after closing arguments Tuesday.

His lawyers also said they have no inkling what jurors might be thinking or how they might be leaning.

"Of course, we're worried," Joe Lopez, who delivered the closing for the defense, said about the final verdict. "Nobody knows what's going to happen."

Hicks gives Eastwood credit for 'entertaining' RNC; Station Casinos ...

Taylor Hicks at Surrender Nightclub in the Encore on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012.

A rake of the scene, which this week included a trip to Radio City Music Hall in New York and Girls, Girls, Girls Gentlemen?s Club in VegasVille.

And that was just Thursday.

Onward:

? Taylor Hicks came out of his appearance at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., impressed by the scope of the event (15,000 credentialed media members and an arena audience of 18,000 delegates caught his attention) and Clint Eastwood?s decision to take the stage without the use of a teleprompter or prepared speech.

In terms of political affiliation, Hicks has described himself as apolitical and has also said he would have performed for the Democratic National Convention if summoned.

?My job in the program was to give the convention a spark and get everybody excited,? Hicks said in a phone conversation Friday from Reno, where he is appearing at Harrah?s through Monday night. ?Never thought I would open for Clint Eastwood and Mitt Romney.?

Backed by the G.E. Smith Band (Smith is the longtime band leader on ?Saturday Night Live?) and wearing a charcoal-colored suit, Hicks performed ?Takin? It to the Streets,? covering the Doobie Brothers classic.

Hicks? performance led to the appearance of Eastwood, whose onstage banter with an empty chair occupied by an invisible Obama played out like a scene from a David Lynch film.

?I talked to him right before he went on,? Hicks said. ?He was going without a teleprompter, semi-off the cuff, so I knew it was going to be really entertaining.?

Really, really entertaining.

Hicks is still not signed to perform again in Las Vegas, which seems only a matter of time and timing. There has been no official word out of Caesars Entertainment about Hicks? return to Bally?s, where he roared through Indigo over the summer. But I?d wager he?ll be back, something long-term, and I?d make that wager at the Bally?s sports book.

Lon Bronson performs at Ovation at Green Valley Ranch.

? Whenever prompted, Lon Bronson bemoans the trend of resort companies pulling high-caliber talent out of lounges, or replacing lounges with nightclubs. The venerable bandleader and trumpet player is working against that trend, in partnership with Station Casinos entertainment director and visionary Judy Alberti. Starting Friday at 10:30 p.m., the Lon Bronson All-Star Band is performing at Ovation at Green Valley Ranch. There is no admission charge to put the core band of 15 musicians and vocalists onstage.

As Bronson said in the latest episode of ?Kats With the Dish,? this is the model that hotel-casino employed generations ago, when entertainment was used as a ?loss leader,? bringing top-flight performers into the lounges to play free of charge. The payoff was those acts lured customers who otherwise would not walk through the casino doors.

?We have two resort chains, we?ll call them Ford and GM, who would not do that,? Bronson said. ?Stations is doing it, and I?m just crossing my fingers that they keep with this policy.?

In the arrangement, the hotel keeps the bar take and pays the band a flat fee to appear onstage.

?Stations is the last corporation to be doing this in Vegas,? Bronson said. ?This is the way Vegas used to be, and in my opinion the way Vegas should be: Free shows, charge for the alcohol, but give the shows away.?

Bronson?s band has been one of the city?s top acts for more than 20 years since breaking out at Riviera?s Le Bistro Theatre for Monday night performances that drew many of the city?s top artists (and a host of visiting entertainers). Having performed over the years all over town at such hotels as Golden Nugget and M Resorts, Bronson?s band had most recently had performed alternate Thursdays at Ovation.

?We?re very fortunate,? Bronson said. ?It?s like ?The Three Bears?; this one is just right.?

Late motherhood: A selfish choice?

ScienceDaily (Sep. 3, 2012) ? When women give birth in their late thirties or in their forties, it is not necessarily the result of a lifestyle choice -- putting off motherhood for career reasons or from a desire to "have it all." Nor should they be accused of selfishness or taking undue health risks.

These are among the arguments of psychologist Kirsty Budds, who has researched what is commonly termed 'delayed motherhood' at the University of Huddersfield.

Her latest paper on the subject was presented at a conference organised by the British Psychology Society at St Andrew's University.

Her work is entitled a "Critical Discursive Analysis of 'Delayed' Motherhood" .

"I don't like the term 'delayed' because it implies agency and it implies choice," she says.

"It implies that women who have babies later on are putting something off or waiting for something. I question whether it is actually a choice, but if it is, then it is a choice that is constrained and shaped by the values in our society and the pressures upon women," she adds.

Kirsty Budds's research has included a detailed analysis of newspaper articles that dealt with the subject of older mothers.

"The assumption in newspapers is that women choose to delay motherhood for career reasons, which implies selfishness. "Also, anxiety over women putting careers before motherhood demonstrates the strength of the motherhood mandate -- in our society motherhood is considered more important for women than other occupations, such that they should be prioritising it. Furthermore, there is evidence in the media of a resistance to women 'having it all' " says Kirsty.

She also conducted detailed interviews with a number of older mothers but found that this is not how they defined themselves.

Despite a widespread assumption that older mothers will have a qualitatively different experience than younger women, Kirsty found that in general their transition to motherhood was typical to that of any woman, regardless of age.

There is also extensive media alarm about the health risks attached to later motherhood, says Kirsty.

"It is almost as if they are saying that by choosing to have babies later these women were choosing to put themselves and their children at risk."

It is still the medical convention to regard 35 as the age at which greater risk is attached to pregnancy, but the risk boundary is probably rising to 40 as later motherhood becomes more normative, argues Kirsty, who hopes that her research will lead to a more balanced view of late motherhood.

"For a lot of women it isn't a selfish choice but is based around careful decisions, careful negotiations and life circumstances such as the right partner and the right financial position. These women are effectively responsibly trying to produce the best situation in which to have children, which is encouraged societally, but then they are chastised because they are giving birth when older, when it is more risky."
