Teeny Fly Likely Cuts Off Tiny Heads

60-Second Science60-Second Science | More Science

A newly discovered phorid fly is less than half-a-millimeter long and, if its like its relatives, parasitizes and decapitates tiny ants. Sophie Bushwick reports.

Fruit flies are pretty small. But they laugh at a species of fly recently discovered in Thailand. Dubbed Euryplatea nanaknihali, this member of the phorid fly family is less than half a millimeter long?a fifth the size of a fruit fly.

But before you ooh and aah over the ?cute widdle bug,? bear in mind that it probably makes its living cutting off the heads of tiny ants. The fly is described in the Annals of the Entomological Society of America. [Brian V. Brown, Small Size No Protection for Acrobat Ants: World's Smallest Fly Is a Parasitic Phorid (Diptera: Phoridae)]

Many phorid species lay their eggs in living ants. The newly hatched larvae move to the ants? heads, feed on them and eventually decapitate them.

But some ants were considered immune to the parasitic threat because they were too small for any known fly species to fit into their heads. With the discovery of the littlest phorid fly, however, that size advantage?or rather, lack-of-size advantage?vanishes.?

It?s not definite yet, but the new little fly probably is an ant eater: its pointy abdomen is well adapted to pierce an ant?s body for egg-laying purposes. How adorable is that?

Polygamy, Morality, and Lot's of other "-y"s

There?s a small town in the middle of America called Round Town, USA, with white picket fences, church-going townspeople, a beautiful Main Street, and rambling rose. Round Town certainly is the epitom? of the All-American experience. There?s at least four baseball fields, a brand new public high school, Round High, a prestigious Catholic college, St. Thomas More Liberal Arts Academy and Seminary, a classic town hall, and a cute little farmer?s market.

But Round Town is hiding a secret. A little ways off from town is a family. A large family. The Lorraines came to town about ten years ago, and instantly fell in love with everything. The Lorraines enjoy Friday night baseball games, send their kids off to Round High, attend various churches throughout the town, participate in local government, and enjoy Saturday mornings at the farmer?s market. They appear to be quite a happy family. But there?s one thing that hasn?t escaped the townspeople: there seems to be more adult-Lorraines than the original count. Though Lorraines have yet to officially open up about their family life, it is well-known the Lorraines are polygamists.

Can the Lorraines prove that it's possible to unite such a large family, despite all their human faults and dynamic relationships? Can they do it before the town tears their family apart? Will their family tear itself apart? Or will the Lorraines be able to successfully convince Round Town that they can be perfectly normal members of the community?

We Still Have One Heart is a literate+ RP devoted to the inner workings of a multi-faceted family in classic America. Characters are based on many interchangeable faceclaims, and role-players are welcome to come and create living, breathing avatars. Reservations last two days and are renewable. This RP will be slow-paced, so it can be juggled with any number of RPs. The GM, although new, is ready to help, entertain and immerse all players, as he draws from years of many different kinds of RP as well as outside life experiences.

Note: This RP is inspired, but not based on, the Sister Wives television series on TLC, which features the Brown family of 1 husband and 4 wives. This family is FLDS, but the religiosity in We Still Have One Heart is fluid and dynamic, and any character of any creed (or lack thereof) is invited.

ComScore: iOS and Android market share continues to climb, RIM and Motorola continue to fall

ComScore iOS and Android market share continues to climb, RIM and Motorola continue to fall

Ready for some hardcore smartphone market share numbers? ComScore's got 'em for the three-month period ending in May 2012, and you probably won't be terribly surprised by the outcome. First, let's tackle smartphone platforms: Apple and Google posted minor increase month-over-month at 0.5 and 0.1 percent, respectively (1.7 and 0.8 over a three-month span). Microsoft (consisting of Windows Phone and Windows Mobile) didn't budge between April and May, though it nudged up a tenth of a percentage point since February. RIM dropped 0.2 percent over one month, but it already experienced a much more painful sting -- 2.0 percent -- during the three-month period. Symbian also went through similar concerns, going down 0.2 percent month-over-month and 0.4 percent since February.

As for specific manufacturers, Apple once again comes out on top, adding 1.5 percent to its customer base over the last three months for a total of 15 percent share. Samsung, still leading the pack in total market share at 25.7 percent, only grew by 0.1. Given the OEM's success in deploying the Galaxy S III to every major US carrier, we suspect that number will spurt up even higher over the next quarter. Among the companies losing share: LG, Motorola and HTC, losing 0.3, 0.8 and 0.2 percent, respectively.

Free Computer Games to Make Your PC Come Alive | Internet ...

There is not one computer in the world that doesn?t have one or two games installed. Even if what you have is a work PC, you still need some sort of diversion from the task piling up your table every day. That is the reason why Microsoft created their operating system with built-in free computer games like Solitaire, Hearts, Free Cell and Pin Ball. Too bad your boss doesn?t like them and wipes them away.

But don?t worry. While you can?t enjoy the computers at work with all the games your heart wants to play, you can always pack your PC at home with a huge collection of free computer games that you can get a grip of. These games can easily be installed on your computer right off the internet.

There is a plethora of free computer games over the worldwide web that your computer?s hard drive, no matter how big it is, can?t possibly contain. So just pick several of the games that you tend to enjoy most and install them in one neat folder in your computer. That is how you make your PC ? or any PC for that matter ? come alive.

There are many games available online and you are free to pick the type that suits your fantasies. There are shooting games, role-playing games, and adventure games especially for the man in you. On the other hand, girl?s games like bubble games, dress-up games, and simulation games are easily obtainable as well.

If you want these games, you simply have to go out on a surfing spree and find the gaming sites that offers free download of their games. Also, it is quite possible to play such games using your browser, just in case you want to enjoy them while at work and without the need for installation. Just be sure that your boss doesn?t block the site and you won?t get caught playing it!

There is a game especially made for everybody. A single game can come in a thousand of variations and one of them is a perfect fit to what you are looking for. For example, a simple racing game with a car and controls can be offered in ten thousand different scenarios over the internet. While all of them are somewhat different in look and in style, there is only one goal ? and that is to take your car into the finish line in one piece and ahead of all the others.

Indeed, a PC without even the free computer games installed is not exciting. If you want your computer to come alive, you have to install every new game released in it. That is how you get to enjoy the beauty of both worlds ? that of strictly work and of fine leisure. With a computer game, you can reach the farthest end of the earth without even leaving your seat. Try it and you will be amazed as to what free computer games can do for you.

U.S. companies blame Europe for earnings warnings

NEW YORK (Reuters) - As an increasing number of American companies warn their earnings will fall short of expectations, many are pointing the finger at Europe as the culprit.

As the second-quarter corporate results season gets underway in the next few weeks, the euro zone debt crisis, weak European demand, the euro currency's decline and the impact of it all on the global economic environment, will be front and center.

A Thomson Reuters study of 85 Standard & Poor's 500 companies that have warned investors their earnings would be worse than expected in the quarter shows at least 20 cited Europe specifically, 15 noted currency movements and 12 talked more vaguely about uncertainty due to global economic conditions. Most of the others were not specific or had more unique or isolated problems.

Even the handful of big consumer products companies which are saying that China's slowing economy is starting to hurt their sales can also see the euro zone's hand in it all. Many Chinese factories are being hit by reduced export demand - from Europe.

So while the news may have brightened somewhat at the end of last week because euro zone leaders agreed on a series of crisis-fighting measures, it won't take Europe - where many economies are either in or close to a recession - out of the corporate news headlines in the next few weeks at least.

"Europe is clearly a headwind impacting demand for goods and services," said Kathy Karlic, group vice president at Wilmington Trust Investment Advisors in Buffalo, New York. Wilmington Trust manages $70 billion in assets.

Some 14 percent of all S&P 500 company sales come from Europe alone, according to S&P data.

The overall effect is significant. The number of companies that have said second-quarter results will be worse than forecast outnumbers those who say the picture has brightened by 3.62 to 1 - the most negative it has been in almost 11 years, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Companies that have cited Europe run the gamut, from personal computer maker Hewlett-Packard to consumer staples company Procter & Gamble and coffee chain Starbucks.

Last Thursday, Ford Motor Co said its losses from outside North America could be triple the $190 million posted in the first quarter, largely due to the headwind from Europe.

Overall, S&P 500 second-quarter earnings growth is seen at 5.8 percent from a year ago, the data shows. But once you exclude the stunning growth expected from Apple Inc and unusual comparisons with a bad year-earlier quarter for Bank of America , earnings are expected to decline 0.4 percent. Revenue is seen up just 1.7 percent for the quarter, the data showed.

Investors typically look to earnings reports to give stocks a lift, but if guidance is any indicator, companies are feeling a lot more pessimistic than optimistic.

The euro's weakness against the dollar has an immediate translation impact on the dollar earnings of U.S. companies with big European operations. It also tends to make U.S.-produced goods less competitive overseas. In the second quarter, the euro has fallen 5.2 percent against the dollar.

"We have a strengthening dollar, which is not going to be good for multinationals that have foreign operations," said Jeff Schwarte, U.S. equities portfolio manager for Principal Global Investors in Des Moines, Iowa. The firm manages $258 billion in assets.

Mike Kovar, chief financial officer at consumer accessories company Fossil , warned that the dollar's strength was expected to reduce the company's second-quarter and full-year earnings.

CONSUMERS STRESSED

Negative-to-positive guidance is the worst in the consumer discretionary sector at 21-to-1.

That is despite an 18-percent decline in oil prices in the second quarter, which is expected to have reduced energy and material costs for corporations and consumers alike.

In its last quarterly report, Starbucks said it suffered its first decline in same-store sales in Europe since 2009, with particular weakness in Ireland and Germany. "The situation is very, very tough," Chief Executive Howard Schultz said of Europe's economy.

Another consumer discretionary company, Priceline.com pointed to Europe and the decline in the euro in its quarterly forecast, which warned of slower second-quarter bookings growth.

In the technology sector, Hewlett Packard, NetApp and Applied Materials were among companies that cited Europe in their outlooks.

"Europe is one tough place to do business right now, and my personal prediction is that this is going to get a little bit softer before it gets stronger," Hewlett Packard CEO and President Meg Whitman said on the company's May 23 earnings conference call.

And it is not as if companies are getting a lot of offsetting help from the rest of the world. U.S. economic growth has failed to pick up momentum this year with U.S. gross domestic product up at only a 1.9 percent annual rate in the first quarter, data showed on Thursday.

U.S. corporations' worries about China, though less severe than fears about Europe, add to the dampened outlook for overseas business. Persistent slowing demand, not just in Europe and the United States but also in China, was behind a June 20 reduced forecast from Procter & Gamble.

Also, Nike Inc , which on Thursday reported earnings below expectations for the quarter ended May 31, said advance orders growth in greater China had dropped sharply from a year ago.

Baltimore Washington Eye Center Announces Fireworks Eye Safety Awareness Month

BALTIMORE, MD, June 30, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- "Contrary to what you might think, there is no safe way for nonprofessionals to use fireworks and the risk of catastrophic eye injury is real and not trivial," commented Baltimore Ophthalmologist Arturo Betancourt, M.D., Medical Director of Baltimore Washington Eye Center.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, fireworks are involved in approximately 10,000 injuries per year that are treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms. Of those, 2/3 occurred during the one month period surrounding the July 4th holiday. It is important to note that
- Eyes were the second most commonly injured part of the body!
- Males were injured 3x more than females.
- Approximately 25% of injuries are to children under 15.

Fireworks and celebrations go together, especially during the Fourth of July. But there are precautions parents can take to prevent these injuries. The best defense against kids suffering severe eye injuries and burns is to not let kids play with any fireworks. Do not purchase, use or store fireworks of any type. Protect yourself, your family and your friends by avoiding fireworks. Attend only authorized public fireworks displays conducted by licensed operators, but be aware that even professional displays can be dangerous.

Some general guidelines to be aware of in the event an eye accident and injury does occur, include:
- Do not rub the eye.
- Do not attempt to rinse out the eye. This can be even more damaging than rubbing.
- Do not apply pressure to the eye itself- but protecting the eye from further contact with any item, including the child's hand.
- Do not stop for medicine! Over-the-counter pain relievers will not do much to relieve pain. Aspirin (should never be given to children) and ibuprofen can thin the blood, increasing bleeding. Take the child to the emergency room at once.
- Do not apply ointments or drops. They may not be sterile and may make the area around the eye slippery and harder for the doctor to examine.

According to Baltimore Washington Eye Center Refractive Services Director Brad Spagnolo, M.D., "Once you are seen in the emergency room, please feel free to have your doctor call Baltimore Washington Eye Center at 800-495-3937 as we always have an eye doctor 'on call' to provide consultation and continued care for you."

Baltimore Washington Eye Center is a leading eye care practice serving the greater Baltimore and Washington, D.C. area staffed by a team of Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Opticians, technical and administrative staff who provide eye examinations for adults and children, cataract surgery and intraocular lens implants (IOL), laser vision correction such as LASIK, diagnosis and treatment of cornea disease, care for diseases of the retina including diabetes and age related macular degeneration (AMD) and diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma as well as contact lenses, eyeglasses, eyewear and optical services. Darvish says he's 'not worthy' of being All-Star

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:09 p.m. ET June 29, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Yu Darvish doesn't think he's deserving of being an All-Star in his first season in the major leagues, despite his 10-4 record with the Texas Rangers.

"Personally, do I feel like I'm an All-Star? I don't think so," Darvish said through his translator Friday. "And I'm also hearing there's a possibility that I might start an All-Star game, and to me that's totally out of context. ... Am I going to be an All-Star? I don't know. But do I think that I'm worthy? Probably not."

The Japanese standout made his comments two days before the All-Star teams will be announced. He also makes his next start for the Rangers on Sunday, in the finale of a four-game series against Oakland.

Darvish was a five-time All-Star and two-time Pacific League MVP over the past seven seasons in Japan. The Rangers paid more than $107 million to sign the 25-year-old pitcher last winter.

"I think that the fact that I'm Japanese, the first year over here, the Texas Rangers paid a lot of money for me to come over here, I think the fact that I am an All-Star candidate, I think that's more of a buildup by just who I am and where I came from," he said.

The AL All-Star manager is the Rangers' Ron Washington.

Darvish was tied for the AL lead with 10 wins and had a 3.57 ERA after beating Detroit on Tuesday night, when he became only the second major leaguer in a half-century to win his first seven career home starts.

The 6-foot-5 right-hander has 106 strikeouts and 50 walks in 95 2-3 innings over 15 starts. He was fourth in the AL in strikeouts, but also had the third-most walks in the league. He had the most walks until his last start when he had his fourth 10-strikeout game while walking only one batter.

"Whether I'm not leading anymore, still I'm giving up more walks than I should," he said. "That's something that I'm going to improve on in the future."
