Keep Acidulated Water on Hand for Sliced Fruit [Kitchen Hacks]

Keep Acidulated Water on Hand for Sliced FruitEveryone knows that adding lemon juice to sliced fruit will keep it from browning, but it can also impart a bitter flavor to the fruit unless you balance it with a little sugar or other sweetener. Bento weblog Lunch in a Box recommends having a small container of water with lemon juice and sweetener ready to go in your fridge so you can quickly assemble lunches and snacks on the fly.

Lunch in a Box also notes that

any form of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) will work including lime juice, orange juice, cream of tartar, a crushed vitamin C tablet dissolved in water, or even ground chili pepper. I like the flavor that orange juice adds to fruit, but often use bottled lemon juice with a little Splenda or sugar for the same effect without the pucker. Salt water also slows browning and adds an interesting savory bite to fruit.

Adding the acidulated water to a spray bottle would also work well.

Michelle Trachtenberg: I Was Almost Bella in 'Twilight'

Michelle Trachtenberg is a young, fair-skinned brunette, so it makes sense that she was one of the many young actresses who could have played Bella Swan in Twilight. But Trachtenberg had more than a passing chance at the part, she explains.

U.S. jobless rate drops to 2-1/2 year low (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The U.S. unemployment rate tumbled to a 2-1/2 year low in November, even though the pace of hiring remained too slow to suggest a significant acceleration in the labor market recovery.

Nonfarm payrolls increased by 120,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department said on Friday, and the jobless rate dropped to 8.6 percent, the lowest since March 2009, from 9.0 percent in October.

It was the biggest monthly decline since January. While part of the decrease was due to people leaving the labor force, the household survey from which the department calculates the unemployment rate also showed solid gains in employment.

"The economy is continuing to head in the right direction," said Millan Mulraine, senior macro strategist at TD Securities in New York. "However, the ultimate test of the sustainability of the recovery is for the economy to create a sufficient number of jobs to sustain a consumer-led rebound in activity."

"On this measure, this report falls short," he said.

Although the gain in the number of jobs created as measured by the survey of employers was relatively modest, it marked a pick-up from October's upwardly revised 100,000 increase.

In all, 72,000 more jobs were created in October and September than previously reported.

The retail sector accounted for more than a third all new private sector jobs in November as shops geared up for a busy holiday season, but average earnings fell two cents.

So far data ranging from manufacturing to retail sales suggest the U.S. economy's growth pace could top 3 percent in the fourth quarter, an acceleration from the third quarter. In contrast, much of the rest of the world is slowing and the euro zone appears to have already fallen into recession.

FED MAY STILL ACT

Stocks on Wall Street rose on both the employment report and growing optimism of a solution to the European debt crisis. Prices for U.S. government debt rose and the dollar gained against a basket of currencies.

The report could temper the appetite among some Federal Reserve officials to ease monetary policy further.

In forecasts released earlier this month, the Fed said the jobless rate would likely average 9 percent to 9.1 percent in the fourth quarter. It did not expect it to drop to an 8.5 percent to 8.7 percent range until late next year.

"The drop in the unemployment rate may make them a little less antsy to pull out the big guns, but there is still not enough evidence of sustained, above-trend growth to get them to stop worrying about downside risks," said Michael Feroli, an economist at JPMorgan in New York.

However, it is unlikely to take much pressure off President Barack Obama, whose economic stewardship will face the judgment of voters next November.

Obama used the report to press Congress to extend a payroll tax holiday which expires this month. Economists have warned that failure to renew the tax cut would a significant drag on the recovery next year.

"Now is not the time to slam the brakes on the recovery, right now its time to step on the gas," Obama said.

ROBUST HOUSEHOLD JOB GAINS

While the government's survey of employers has shown a still-tepid pace of job growth, its separate poll of households has shown robust jobs gains for four straight months amounting to 1.28 million.

Analysts were unperturbed by the exit by 315,000 people from the labor force last month, noting that more people had piled in over the last three months. If the labor participation rate had held steady, the unemployment rate would have fallen less dramatically to 8.9 percent.

The expiration of extended long-term unemployment benefits at the end of December may have contributed to the big drop in the labor force, as well as some of the so-called baby-boomers retiring.

In order to qualify for unemployment benefits, recipients have to be actively looking for work.

"It is likely that many long-term unemployed workers are dropping out as their unemployment insurance benefits expire. Many of these workers will likely stay out of the job market permanently," said Sophia Koropeckyj, a director of research at Moody's Analytics in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

Also pointing to the improving labor market tone, a broad measure of unemployment that includes people who want to work but have given up looking for jobs and those working only part time for economic reasons dropped to a 2-1/2 year low of 15.6 percent in November from 16.2 percent in October.

Last month, the private sector added 140,000 jobs and government employment fell 20,000. Elsewhere, retail employment surged 49,800, the most in seven months.

Construction payrolls fell for second straight month, while factory jobs edged up 2,000. Temporary hiring -- seen as a harbinger for future hiring - increased 22,300.

Lexmark Pro715

The Lexmark Pro715 ($200 list) is chock full of business-oriented features (including but not limited to fax, ADF, and auto-duplexer), making it a good choice for a micro or home office. Although it?s limited in home-centered features, it does print good photos, so it can serve as a household multi-function printer (MFP) as well.

The Pro715 is black, with silver sides and bottom. It measures 9.8 by 18.3 by 15.9 inches (HWD) and weighs 20.4 pounds. The tilt-up front panel includes a 2.4-inch (non-touch) color LCD plus 4-way controller; an alphanumeric keypad plus related fax buttons (Address book, Dial tone, Pause, and Redial); and buttons for On, Off, Start, Home, Back, Color/BW, and Eco.

The Pro715 can print, scan, copy, and fax. It can scan to a network or to e-mail. It has a 50-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF), for feeding multi-page documents for copying, faxing, or scanning. A front USB port permits scanning to, or printing from, a USB thumb drive (as well as printing from PictBridge-enabled cameras), and you can preview your images on the LCD. The Pro715 lacks media-card slots.

The paper tray has a 150-sheet capacity, which should be fine for individuals as well as most micro or home offices. For those who need more, an optional 550-page tray ($130 street) is also available, for a maximum paper capacity of 700 sheets. An automatic duplexer, for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper, is standard on the Pro715.

This MFP is compatible with Lexmark?s latest LexPrint mobile printing app for iPhone and Android, and is also Apple AirPrint compatible.?

The Pro715 offers Ethernet, WiFi, and USB connectivity. I tested it over an Ethernet connection with its driver installed on a PC running Windows Vista.

Lexmark Pro715

Print Speed and Output Quality

The Lexmark Pro715 printed out the latest version of our business applications suite (as timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software) at 3.1 effective pages per minute (ppm). The Brother MFC-J825DW ($150 street, 4 stars) and Epson Stylus NX625 ($149.99 direct, 4 stars) , both Editors? Choice MFPs, each finished the same tests at 4.0 ppm, while we clocked the Kodak Office HERO 6.1 ($199.99 direct, 4 stars) at 2.7 ppm.

Text quality was a touch below par for an inkjet, good enough for general business use, but not for documents like resumes where visual impact is important, let alone desktop publishing using small fonts.

The Pro715?s graphics quality was average for an inkjet. The most serious issue was banding (a regular pattern of white streaks against solid, dark backgrounds)?at times significant enough that I?d hesitate to distribute the graphics to anyone I wished to impress. Other issues included posterization (abrupt shifts in color where they should be gradual), and uneven distribution of ink in solid backgrounds.

Photo quality was above average for an inkjet; the prints are probably the best I?ve seen from a Lexmark printer. Colors were rich and well saturated, and detail was retained in both light and dark areas.? All the test prints were of at least the quality you?d expect from drugstore prints, with some of them better.

Other Issues

Lexmark claims running costs of 2.4 cents per monochrome page and 15.2 cents per color page, based on the most economical ink cartridges. The monochrome cost per page is among the lowest we?ve seen for an inkjet, while the cost per color page is on the high side.

Unlike previous models we?ve reviewed in Lexmark?s Professional series, which had 5-year limited warranties, the Pro715?s warranty is for just one year. Lexmark says that this change was made based on customer feedback, to keep the sticker price down in lieu of adding years of service.

The Lexmark Pro715 has the paper capacity and features to put it in good stead as an MFP for a micro or home office. It prints good-quality photos, giving it some appeal for doing double duty in the home as well as home office, although it lacks photo-centric features such as a second paper tray or the ability to print from media cards. There are faster inkjet MFPs?the Brother MFC-J825DW and Epson Stylus NX625 (both PCMag Editors? Choice printers) among them?and the MFC-J825DW offers a more comprehensive range of both home-office and home features, but the Lexmark Pro715 is a good choice to anchor a micro-office, and prints good photos to boot.

(AP) ? David Beckham said he has a "big decision to make" after his contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy expires and reiterated his desire to play for the British team at the 2012 London Olympics.

The former England captain arrived in Manila on Thursday with his Galaxy teammates for the second leg of a series of exhibitions.

"I'm very proud of the time that I've spent with the Galaxy and it might continue," said Beckham, whose contract expires at the end of the tour. "I think at the end of the day I have a big decision to make, but I obviously haven't made one yet."

Beckham said he "would love to be part of the GB team" in the Olympics next year, especially since the games will be played in a part of London where he grew up.

"Hopefully, I'll be going back to London next summer," he said.

The Galaxy won 1-0 against Indonesia on Wednesday, play the Philippine national team on Saturday and head to Australia.

The exhibition on Saturday in Manila is expected to give a boost to soccer in a country where the national team is lowly ranked and basketball and boxing are the most popular sports in town.

Galaxy coach Bruce Arena encouraged Filipino soccer players to "work hard" and "chase the dream" of international competition.

The Philippine team is improving, reaching the semifinals this year at the Asean Football Federation Cup. Most of the players are half-Filipinos from European leagues who want to play for the country.

Before Saturday's game, Beckham and the Galaxy will hold a soccer clinic with children from poor communities in Manila.

"We always try to play diplomatic football ... but we want to win. It doesn't matter if its a friendly, we want to win the game," he said.
