(AP) ? Internet service went down Thursday across Syria and international flights were canceled at the Damascus airport when a road near the facility was closed by heavy fighting in the country's civil war.

Activists said President Bashar Assad's regime pulled the plug on the Internet, perhaps in preparation for a major offensive. Cellphone service also went out in Damascus and parts of central Syria, they said. The government blamed rebel fighters for the outages.

With pressure building against the regime on several fronts and government forces on their heels in the battle for the northern commercial hub of Aleppo, rebels have recently begun pushing back into Damascus after largely being driven out of the capital following a July offensive. One Damascus resident reported seeing rebel forces near a suburb of the city previously deemed to be safe from fighting.

The Internet outage, confirmed by two U.S.-based companies that monitor online connectivity, is unprecedented in Syria's 20-month-old uprising against Assad, which activists say has killed more than 40,000 people.

Regime forces suffered a string of tactical defeats in recent weeks, losing air bases and other strategic facilities. The government may be trying to blunt additional rebel offensives by hampering communications.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland condemned what she called the regime's "assault" on Syrians' ability to communicate with each other and express themselves. She said the move spoke to a desperate attempt by Assad to cling to power.

Syrian authorities often cut phone and Internet service in select areas to disrupt rebel communications when regime forces are conducting major operations.

The government sent mixed signals about the Internet outage but denied it was nationwide. The pro-regime TV station Al-Ikhbariya quoted Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi as saying that "terrorists" have targeted Internet cables, interrupting service in several cities.

Separately, state-run TV said the outage was due to a technical failure that affected some provinces, adding that technicians were trying to fix it.

Activists in Syria, reached by satellite telephones unaffected by the outage, confirmed the communications problems.

A young Syrian businessman who lives in an upscale neighborhood of Damascus, which some refer to as part of "the green zone" because it has remained relatively safe, sent a text message to an Associated Press reporter Thursday that said the Internet had been cut in his area and that mobile phone service was cutting out.

He said he was driving Wednesday through the Damascus suburb of Aqraba, near the airport, and saw dozens of rebel fighters for the first time in the area, riding in pickup trucks and motorcycles, and wielding AK-47s.

Their presence so close to the "green zone" may have led to the Internet being cut, said the resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he feared government reprisal. He said the military was positioned a few hundred meters away from the rebel fighters and had built large speed bumps to enclose the area.

The opposition said the Internet blackout was an ominous sign that the regime was preparing a major offensive.

"I fear that cutting the Internet may be a prelude to a massacre in Damascus," said Adib Shishakly, a Syrian opposition figure from Cairo, Egypt. "The regime feels it is being choked off by rebels who are closing in on the capital from its suburbs. It's a desperate move; they are trying to sever communications between activists."

Renesys, a U.S.-based network security firm that studies Internet disruption, said in a statement that Syria effectively disappeared from the Internet at 12:26 p.m. local time.

"In the global routing table, all 84 of Syria's IP address blocks have become unreachable, effectively removing the country from the Internet," Renesys said. It added that the main autonomous system responsible for Internet in the country is the Syrian Telecommunications Establishment, and that "all of their customer networks are currently unreachable."

Akamai Technologies Inc., another U.S.-based company that distributes content on the Internet, also confirmed the complete outage.

Jim Cowie, the chief technology officer at Renesys, said the abruptness of the outage suggested it wasn't due to a severed cable. Syria has several cables that connect it to the outside world, and all of them would have had to be cut at once for a complete outage. A power outage or an intentional shutdown at central Syrian telecommunications facilities is a more likely cause, he said.

"We saw everything go in three to four minutes, which looks like a light switch," Cowie said.

He said the profile of the outage was similar to what the Egyptian government did in January 2011 during the Arab Spring uprising that toppled longtime leader Hosni Mubarak. Egypt switched off the Internet for five days, halting businesses, banking and ? at the height of the demonstrations ? the ability of protest leaders to organize and communicate with each other.

Bahrain's Sunni rulers also jammed cellphones during the military offensive on the protesters' encampment in the capital of Manama in March 2011. Internet service remained at a crawl when the Bahrain's military stormed the city's Pearl Square ? the headquarters of the revolt ? after weeks of street protests.

Ann Harrison, deputy program director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International, said in a statement that the group worried the communications were cut in Syria "to shield the truth of what is happening in the country from the outside world."

The shadowy group of hacker-activists known as Anonymous sent out a tweet Thursday saying that as of 9 p.m. (0200 GMT Friday) it would "begin removing from the Internet all web assets belonging to the Assad regime that are NOT hosted in Syria. We will begin with the websites and servers belonging to ALL Syrian Embassies abroad, which we will begin systematically removing from the Internet tonight." It said the first target was the website of the Syrian Embassy in China.

"By turning off the Internet in Syria, the butcher Assad has shown that the time has come for Anonymous to remove the last vestiges of his evil government from the Internet," Anonymous said in its statement.

Thursday's violence appeared to be focused on southern suburbs near the Damascus international airport, forcing the military to shut the road to the facility. The surrounding districts have been strongholds of rebel support since the uprising began.

At the United Nations, the secretary-general's office said at least four soldiers assigned to the U.N. Disengagement Observer Force in the Golan Heights were injured in the crossfire on the airport road as their unit was heading out for a routine rotation of forces.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the regime has started a major offensive around the airport where rebels have been particularly active in recent weeks.

Abdul-Rahman, who relies on a network of activists in Syria, said large convoys of government reinforcements were seen heading south toward the airport, which is 25 kilometers (15 miles) southeast of Damascus. The fighting was concentrated in and around the suburbs of Aqraba and Beit Saham, he said.

The Syrian Information Ministry later said the airport road was secure after attacks by "terrorist groups" on motorists, according to state TV. It was not immediately clear whether the road had been reopened.

The fighting prompted both Emirates airline and EgyptAir to cancel flights to Damascus.

Despite months of sporadic fighting and deteriorating security in Damascus, the airport has remained open.

But EgyptAir said in a statement that the airline will halt all flights to Damascus and Aleppo starting Friday, until further notice. EgyptAir head Rushdi Zakaria said the decision was due to deteriorating security conditions in Syria.

Syrian TV also said government forces were chasing "al-Qaida elements" around Damascus, mostly in the eastern suburbs of Douma and the southern suburb of Daraya.

The Observatory said the regime used warplanes to hit districts including Daraya, where fighting has raged for days.

The operation around Damascus comes days after rebels made significant advances in the area. Last week, they captured a major helicopter base just outside the capital.

In the southern city of Daraa, where the uprising began, rebels detonated a car bomb near the house of a senior member of the country's ruling Baath Party, killing him and his three bodyguards, activists said. Rebels frequently target regime figures and military commanders.

Misplaced Moon Rocks Found in Minnesota, More Still Missing

Five small fragments of the moon, which were collected at Tranquility Base 40 years ago and gifted to the people of Minnesota, have been found by the National Guard.

The small lunar stones, which are better described as dust and pebbles rather than moon rocks, were discovered as they were originally presented: embedded inside an acrylic button and mounted to a wooden podium with a Minnesota state flag that also flew to the moon in 1969.

"The Apollo 11 moon rocks were found amongst military artifacts in a storage area at the Veterans Service Building in St. Paul," said Army Maj. Blane Iffert, the former state historian for the Minnesota National Guard.

The Minnesota moon rocks are one of approximately 185 such lunar sample displays that were presented to each of the states, United States' territories and to foreign nations as a goodwill gesture following the return of the Apollo 11 crew, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins.

Similar "goodwill moon rocks" from the final lunar landing, Apollo 17 in December 1972, were also gifted. [NASA's? 17 Apollo Moon Missions (Countdown)]

Minnesota's Apollo 17 goodwill moon rock is displayed by the state's Historical Society in St. Paul, where the Apollo 11 display will be transferred on Wednesday (Nov. 28).

"We are honored to have this in our collection to preserve for future generations," Pat Gaarder, Minnesota Historical Society deputy director, said in a statement announcing the pending delivery of the Apollo 11 moon rocks. "Space exploration is an important part of our shared history. It is also exciting to think that our collection includes artifacts from across the globe and now with these moon rocks, the galaxy."

The six Apollo missions that landed on the moon returned a total of 842 pounds (382 kilograms) of lunar material to Earth. The goodwill gifts, which weigh between 0.05 grams (Apollo 11) and 1.142 grams (Apollo 17) represent in total less than half of one pound (220 grams) of the moon rock brought back by the astronauts.

Lowered by one

The recovery of Minnesota's Apollo 11 display is the latest chapter in a decade-long search for missing goodwill moon rocks. [Lunar Legacy: 45 Apollo Moon Landing Photos]

"When I searched the internet to find additional information about the moon rocks, I knew we had to find a better means to display this artifact," Iffert said. "It is stated on some websites that approximately 180 [sample displays] are currently unaccounted for of the 270 moon rocks from the Apollo 11 and Apollo 17 missions. We've just lowered that number by one."

The effort to catalog the present whereabouts of each of the gifted moon rocks ? the only astronaut-returned lunar samples ever given away by the U.S. government ? has been led by collectSPACE.com since 2002. NASA closely tracks its own lunar material holdings but as the goodwill rocks are no longer federal property, it has fallen to private efforts to find the state and foreign nation-owned samples.

Working with the public, museum staff, and in particular, graduate students at the University of Phoenix led by their professor Joseph Gutheinz, a former NASA special agent, the collectSPACE "field guide" to the Apollo 11 and Apollo 17 moon rocks has successfully located more than 170 of the displays.

Of the Apollo 11 samples that were gifted to the 50 states, 11 remain missing, including the lunar pebbles presented to Massachusetts, New York, Texas and Virginia. Eight of the states' Apollo 17 goodwill moon rocks have not been located, including those in Kansas, New Jersey and Ohio.

No rock unturned

That Minnesota's moon rocks turned up in storage is not too surprising given how many of the gifts that have been found to date have surfaced.

The lunar sample displays were originally intended to be placed on public display, and in many cases they were. But others were held in state officials' offices, or were only part of temporary exhibits. As the years passed, the rocks migrated into former governors' archives and homes, put into boxes and forgotten or otherwise disregarded.

In Nebraska, the state's Apollo 11 moon rocks were lost in the governor's mansion for several years, only to turn up during renovations. In Hawaii, they were locked inside a cabinet until a routine inventory revealed them.

In Delaware, the moon rocks' button-shaped acrylic was stolen in 1976 "right off its display plaque," which remains in state property. And in Alaska, a fire reportedly offered the opportunity for a then-teenage future reality TV star to take the rock from the debris. A court order has returned the lunar sample to NASA pending its authentication and a judge's ruling.

The search has been even more difficult outside the U.S., where language barriers, geography hurdles, and differing laws have further complicated finding them. A few of the foreign-gifted moon rocks, like Malta's Apollo 17 sample, have been reported as stolen, while others may be exactly where they are supposed to be but cannot be labeled as "found" until someone sets eyes on them and reports their location.

Israel, militants begin talks on truce details

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel and Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip began indirect talks Monday in Egypt aimed at forging a new era of relations between the bitter enemies following a cease-fire that ended the heaviest fighting in nearly four years.

The talks, being mediated by Egypt, were the first negotiations since the cease-fire took effect last Wednesday, halting eight days of airstrikes targeting militant groups in the Palestinian territory and rocket attacks that reached deep into Israel.

Israel launched some 1,500 airstrikes in a bid to end rocket attacks out of Gaza, while the Hamas and the Islamic Jihad militant groups fired a similar number of rockets at Israeli cities. More than 160 Palestinians, including dozens of civilians were killed. Palestinian attacks killed Six Israelis, including four civilians and two soldiers.

Now that fighting has subsided, Egypt is working with the sides on carrying out the second phase of the agreement: negotiating new border arrangements for the impoverished coastal strip.

The negotiations will not be simple. The militants want Israel to lift what remains of its blockade of Gaza, imposed five years ago after Hamas seized control of the territory from its Western-backed rival Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. While Israel has eased the blockade in recent years, key restrictions remain in place on exports out of Gaza and the entry of badly needed building materials into the territory.

The Palestinians are hopeful that Egypt's new Islamist government will ease its own restrictions on movement in and out of the territory. Egypt still limits foot traffic through the Rafah border crossing. The militants also hope to turn the Rafah terminal into a major cargo crossing.

In return, Israel wants an end to arms smuggling into Gaza. Iranian-made weapons have made their way into Gaza through a circuitous route that ends with underground tunnels along the Egyptian border.

An Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the negotiations with the media, said Israel is prepared to take steps to help Gaza's civilians but would be wary of doing anything that could strengthen Hamas. In particular, he said the issue of arms smuggling would be high on the agenda.

"Our assessment is that successfully preventing the rearmament of Hamas and other groups is an integral element of maintaining long-term peace and quiet," the official said.

Yasser Othman, Egypt's top diplomat in the West Bank, confirmed the talks had begun.

Ghazi Hamad, a Hamas official in Gaza, said the group's economics minister, Ziad al-Zaza, was leading the Palestinian delegation. He gave no further details, and it was unclear whether any timeline was imposed for implementing the deal.

But militant leaders already have said they will not give up the vast arsenals they have accumulated. In the recent fighting, Hamas and Islamic Jihad unveiled new rockets capable of striking deep into the Israeli heartland, in addition to anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons.

In an interview Monday, Islamic Jihad leader Ramadan Shallah said Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called him and Hamas' prime minister, Ismail Haniyeh, to offer congratulations after their battle with Israel.

"Iran has been providing us with the support we needed to defend ourselves in the face of the Zionist occupation. Iran supported us militarily and financially and with everything we need to stand steadfast on our land," Shallah said. "We appreciate that and hope that all the Arab countries do the same."

He also said he hoped the latest fighting would inspire Palestinians in the West Bank to rise up against Israel as well.

Abbas, an outspoken critic of violence, has governed in the West Bank since Hamas overthrew his forces in Gaza in 2007. The rival governments repeatedly have failed to reconcile.

After four years of deadlock in peace efforts with Israel, Abbas this week is asking the United Nations to grant the Palestinians upgraded observer status and recognize a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war. The motion, largely symbolic, is expected to pass easily in the U.N. General Assembly.

In a statement, Hamas announced that its supreme leader, Khaled Mashaal, called Abbas to welcome the decision to go to the U.N.

Israeli officials ? backed by the Obama administration ? strongly oppose the move in the belief it is an attempt to bypass negotiations, but they have not said how they will respond.

If you're planning a cocktail party, prep your home with must-have spirits, cocktail ingredients and garnishes to make sure you have everything you need to keep drinks flowing and guests entertained.
When throwing a cocktail party, it's essential to prepare you home bar. Here's advice on how to make sure your bar is well stocked and ready to serve:
  • Shop for your Cocktail Party a few days before your event date.
  • Follow your taste buds to the produce section of your local grocery store or farmers' market, and experiment with new fruits and vegetables in your favorite classic cocktails
  • Find a signature drink to serve at your party and find out the history of that cocktail and share it with your friends. All bartenders are story tellers.
  • Make cocktails in batches. To serve a crowd, break the drink recipe into cups for a pitcher. A pitcher typically serves 20 drinks that are 4 ounces each. Multiply your ounces by two and turn into cups. Always make sure to taste as you batch for quality control.
  • Buy enough beer and wine. While special cocktails can be a hit, beer and wine are often what people reach for at a cocktail party. A few tips to keep in mind when shopping for wine and beer:
Each guest drinking beer with likely consume one 12oz bottle per hour for the duration of the party. Try buying a mix of domestic brews and local micro brews. Each guest drinking wine will consume one 5 oz glass of wine per hour for the duration of the party. There are approximately five glasses of wine per bottle.

Have fun with your home bar. Cocktails are meant for celebrations to create good memories with your friends and family.Know you guests and ensure your bar is stocked with what they like to drink. Make them special and taken care of.

Buy enough ice, Have you ever tried to drink a cocktail and it's only got two half melted ice floating on the top and is?barely?cold. It tends to ruin a great thing. You should have 2.5 pounds of ice for every person at your party. If you plan to have an ice bucket or nice stainless buckets filled for your white wines and beers to keep chilled buy enough extra ice to fill those as well. Remember your ice bucket and displays will sit out and melt don't forget to account for that.

Try this drink recipe for a signature cocktail for the night:

Orange - Cranberry Gin & Tonic

5oz ice

1oz Gin

1.5oz OJ
3.5oz Tonic
Garnish with a few frozen cranberries and a twist of orange rind.

Undefeated: No. 4 Ohio State over No. 20 UM, 26-21

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? The only thing Urban Meyer lost during his first season at Ohio State was his cool ? at the end of the last game.

Carlos Hyde ran for 146 yards and the fourth-ranked Buckeyes' defense shut out No. 20 Michigan in the second half to grab a bruising 26-21 win on Saturday, completing an improbable 12-0 season for the Buckeyes.

Meyer got emotional as the final seconds ticked off, embracing his players on the floor of a raucous Ohio Stadium. Too emotional, he said later.

"I've got to keep a little more composure, I guess," he said sheepishly. "In the coaching manual, I think it's chapter 13, it says, 'Keep cool.' I lost it there for a couple of minutes."

Well, give the guy a break.

Almost no one ? up to and including Meyer ? expected such a rapid turnaround for the Buckeyes, who were just 6-7 last season with a loss to their archrivals in a transitional year when they were facing heavy NCAA penalties. A month after Meyer took the job last November, they were socked with a bowl ban after this season ? and still ran the table.

Ohio State (12-0, 8-0 Big Ten) is ineligible for a BCS national title but still has an outside shot at finishing No. 1 in the final Associated Press Top 25 if other contenders lose. Michigan (8-4, 6-2) will now await a minor bowl bid.

"At this point in time, Ohio State can go and play with anybody in America," Meyer said. "I wouldn't say that five weeks ago, but you've seen the growth, what we did today and the growth of our defense."

Drew Basil matched his season output with four field goals and the defense did the rest, forcing three turnovers in the second half.

It was played before 105,899, the largest crowd ever to witness "The Game" in Columbus.

Meyer and his players were mobbed by thousands of fans who flooded the field after the Buckeyes' ninth victory in the last 11 years in the rivalry (the 2010 win was later vacated by the sanctions).

"It'll go down as one of the great teams in Ohio State history," Meyer exulted.

Hyde also ran for a touchdown. Braxton Miller completed 14 of 18 passes for 189 yards and a score to Corey Brown, who had eight catches for 95 yards.

The Buckeyes had already clinched the Big Ten's Leaders Division, but aren't allowed to play in next Saturday's conference title game. Michigan needed a win to capture a share of the Legends Division with Nebraska, which will meet Wisconsin for the championship.

"I like the W better," said Hoke, who won his debut in The Game a year ago.

Now, about Ohio State can hope for is every other top team in the nation ? including the only other unbeaten, top-ranked Notre Dame ? to lose and lose badly in the coming weeks. A team banned from the postseason has never finished No. 1 in the AP Top 25 poll, and the Buckeyes are not eligible for the Bowl Championship Series rankings or coaches' poll.

Michigan's Denard Robinson had a brilliant first half, scoring on a 67-yard run, but was largely invisible in the second. He totaled 122 yards on 10 carries, but had lost 2 yards on his four carries after halftime.

"We know the reason we lost the game," Robinson said. "We had three turnovers in the second half. That's not acceptable."

Devin Gardner, the other half of Michigan's quarterback tandem, was 11 of 20 for 171 yards with an interception and a 75-yard touchdown pass to Roy Roundtree.

For the Buckeyes, the game will be remembered for the staunch defense played when most needed. Michigan had 26 plays for 219 yards in the first half, then ran 21 plays for a net of 60 yards in the second.

For the Wolverines, there will be lingering questions for Hoke, who wore short sleeves in the freezing temperatures ? just like Woody Hayes used to during the 1960s and 1970s in the rivalry.

With his team ahead 21-20, Hoke called timeout on fourth and 2 near midfield on Michigan's first possession of the second half. Robinson then tried the middle, but ran into linebacker Ryan Shazier for a two-yard loss.

That cost the Wolverines the lead as Ohio State drove to the Michigan 11 before settling for Basil's 28-yard field goal, putting the Buckeyes up 23-21.

"We've got to have each other's back," Hoke said. "We didn't get it and (our own) defense went out there and did a nice job."

Gardner fumbled when hit by Johnathan Hankins with 8:19 left, with Travis Howard pouncing on the loose ball after several players had a shot at it. Taking over at the Wolverines' 10, the Buckeyes could not move the ball and were forced to settle for Basil's fourth field goal of the game, a 25-yarder with 6:26 remaining, for a 26-21 lead.

Basil came into the game just 4 for 6 on the year.

The last turnover ended the Wolverines' hopes.

Gardner tossed a floater that was intercepted by C.J. Barnett, ending the Wolverines final threat as Hyde carried the ball repeatedly and the Buckeyes played keep-away to the finish.

Between the first and second quarters, Ohio State honored its 2002 national championship team. After a highlight clip was shown to a roaring crowd, several players hoisted coach Jim Tressel to their shoulders and carried him out of the end zone.

No boos were heard, or else they were drowned out ? even though it was Tressel's NCAA violations, he failed to report players exchanging team memorabilia for cash and tattoos, which will keep this year's unbeaten Buckeyes home in the postseason.

Asked if ? should his team end up as the only unbeaten in the nation ? it should be crowned No. 1 in the AP poll, Meyer said:

"I'm not going to get into the 'what ifs.' You can't control what you can't control. ... We're 12-0 and I'm going to see to it when you walk into that Woody Hayes (practice) facility that this team will never be forgotten. Because they deserve that."

Allergy: An overview - Global Healthy Life

Allergy refers to unwanted reactions from the immune system while coming in contact with allergens. The allergens could be in the form of foods, non food proteins, skin soaps, detergents, laundry soap, bleach, rubber, metal, jewelry, cosmetics, fragrances, perfume etc. Allergy also occurs due to genetic causes, insect stings, over medications, hygiene proposition and other environmental factors. This article discusses the various causes of allergy in detail:

Foods

Intake of certain types of food could lead to allergy. Some people are allergic to certain kinds of food. Food items which act as allergens are:

Nuts: Allergy to nuts is one of the most widespread food allergies. Many young children around the world are allergic to peanuts. In extreme cases this ailment persists even after childhood. Some people are also sensitive to pecans, pistachios, pine nuts, and walnuts. The sufferers might be sensitive one or more than one types of nuts.

Seeds: Some people are also allergic to seeds like sesame seeds and poppy seeds which are rich in oil and protein content.

Egg: About 2 percent people around the world are allergic to egg. In most of the cases this ailment tends to subside once a child reaches the age of 5. Most of the children are generally allergic to egg white due to its protein content.

Dairy products: Some people mostly children are allergic to dairy products like milk and cheese.

Other foods: Many people around the world are allergic to protein rich foods like soy, wheat, maize, fish, shellfish, chicken etc. Some people are allergic to certain fruits and vegetables. Some people are also sensitive to chemical additives, spices, synthetic and natural colors etc. Many people are sensitive to food products like banana, avocado, kiwifruit, and chestnut which contain plant protein

Non-food proteins

About 1% people are believed to be allergic to latex. This ailment is mostly prevalent among people who work in hospitals. This is mainly due to constant exposure to airborne latex allergens in operating rooms, intensive care units and dental clinics. Constant inhalation of latex allergens could lead to contact dermatitis. The symptoms of this ailment are formation of dry and coated lesions on skin.

Heredity

Allergies are also linked with genes. Children of parents who have allergies are more likely to suffer from allergies. Scientific studies have proved that children of allergic parents suffer from more severe allergies than children of parents who have not suffered from allergies. Twins are also known to suffer from similar allergies.

Toxins interacting with proteins

Exposure to poison ivy, eastern poison oak, western poison oak could lead to redness, swelling, formation of pa pules, vesicles, blisters and streaking. This happens when the integral membrane proteins on exposed skin cells come in contact with the above mentioned allergens leading to a chemical reaction. Preventing exposure to toxins and use of revitol products for skin care can help in preventing this.

Hygiene proposition

Generally everyone is advised to maintain good hygiene. Good hygiene is considered to be the cornerstone of good health. But in terms of allergic diseases this is not true. Sometimes people living in too sterilized environment do not have a strong immune system. This happens because their immune system remains inactive due to lack of exposure to harmful pathogens. Such people fall ill or suffer from allergies after coming in contact with even slightly unhygienic conditions. Scientific studies have proved that people living in developed nations suffer from more allergy related ailments than people living in developing or third world nations.

Environmental factors

Rapid industrialization in the past century has lead to immense degradation of the environment. It has lead to air and water pollution. Coming in contact with contaminated air and drinking polluted water could also lead to various kinds of allergies.

A Dream Within Eden

A Dream Within Eden Roleplay

I am currently looking for two slots to be filled, and once all profiles are done, I plan on getting it started. The Following are the two characters I need filled.

Lazarus, The King of Eden: Now the leader of the City of Eden as well as complete control of the Underground City. His military patrols the Underground City and it's factories to ensure that the people continue to work in peace, and put down any dissenters. As a political tool, he sends two platoons of soldiers out without knowledge of each other, and gives them orders to shoot anyone they see on sight. One platoon is defeated and killed, and Lazarus blames it on the scavengers outside. When he was younger, since his father refused to allow him to marry or have an heir, when Lazarus fell in love with Annabel, he was sent into the army. (The City in the Sea)

Master Eldorado: Is an old scholar who travelled with the original people that founded Eden. There he finds the old books pertaining to how the city originally was. He is strong in his belief that it can be restored back and searches for someone that can do just that. He lives in Eden where he continues to study and teach about the history. He lives alone, sacrificing his own love life to see the city shine like it once had. He taught Leonard and Lenore hoping that they would be the ones to do just that. Now he works with the Lenore, Annabel, and others to try and get rid of Lazarus. He holds onto a book that is forbidden to anyone. He keeps it hidden in a small library that he keeps hidden away from everyone. No one, not even the people who was with him at the time Eden was found, knows about it. (Eldarado)

The characters are based on Edgar Allan Poe's poems. The titles of the poems are at the end of each small character Bio. Keep in mind these are just a basic outline of the character, and you will be the one to design the character as you see fit, as long as they match the small bios.

There are a total of 12 set characters, so having more characters may add some stress to the plot, but I am willing to discuss this and work it out if I think you have an intriguing character idea and how they can fit in.

I am not using the Edgar Allan Poe's stories to base characters, as some of his stories are a tad long, so instead some plots of his stories may be included along the story line. How that will work.. Well they will be used as twists to the story. You CAN however also use his stories as a background/history if you so wish. I will not limit the character design to strictly the poems, but as long as the character fits with the plot and story, I will be more likely to accept them. (again this will need to be discussed with me first.)

I would very much prefer that these two slots be filled first before I even consider other character ideas.

CHINA MONEY-China creates taxation income a financial process tool

Thu Nov 22, 2012 1:01am EST

* Sharp enlargement of mercantile deposits over past decade

* Such deposits can be used by regulators to inject money

* Cash injections in late 2012 to strech record level

* PBOC might not need to cut RRR for rest of year

By Lu Jianxin and Pete Sweeney

SHANGHAI, Nov 22 (Reuters) ? Government revenues deposited
in Chinese blurb banks have grown so vast that regulators
have been means to use them as a financial process tool, increasing
the pointing with that Beijing can conduct growth.

By sensibly auctioning supervision deposits and by
directly redistributing income lifted from taxes and fees to
companies and supervision departments, a Ministry of Finance
(MOF) is now means to use supervision assets to influence
short-term appropriation costs in a wider economy.

This means that marketplace players who guard a central
bank?s open marketplace operations for clues as to a instruction of
monetary process contingency keep another eye on a cycle of funds
moving in and out of accounts tranquil by a MOF.

?Fiscal deposits have spin a vital cause to change the
central bank?s financial process as good as income markets,? pronounced a
senior merchant during a Chinese state-owned bank in Beijing.

?In months when a marketplace is brief of liquidity, the
ministry can also use supervision deposition auctions to assistance the
central bank boost income supply. In this sense, mercantile deposits
are indeed being used as a financial apparatus as well.?

THE WAY IT WORKS

Chinese companies and other institutions, that compensate taxes
and fees to a MOF and a internal offices, contingency deposition these
payments into accounts during designated blurb banks in the
form of mercantile deposits. Such deposits can?t be used by
commercial banks and play no purpose in financial policy.

However, 3 times per month, a blurb banks hand
over all of these deposits to a People?s Bank of China (PBOC),
where they spin partial of a PBOC?s financial base. This base
money can be possibly defended in times of additional liquidity, or
pushed behind into a complement in a form of MOF spending, deposit
auctions and refunds on taxation overpayments.

A diminution in mercantile deposits on blurb banks? balance
sheets therefore implies some-more income has been handed over to the
state and is now accessible for income injection.

On months when mercantile deposits drop, a PBOC customarily has
less need to inject short-term income into a complement in a form
of retreat repurchase agreements, given income is entering the
system by channels tranquil by a MOF.

There are transparent anniversary characteristics to a upsurge of
funds.

In December, for example, a MOF typically injects large
amounts of income in a form of taxation refunds, subsidies to
government institutions and income transfers to companies in
pillar industries.

Deposits also tend to diminution in March, June, September,
and November, while other months customarily uncover net fiscal
deposits increasing, tightening income supply in a banking
system.

RECORD INJECTION

An bargain of a MOF?s position on any given month
can be simply subsequent from monthly information on blurb banks?
end-month mercantile deposits published by a PBOC.

The method accessible a mercantile over-abundance of 829.6 billion yuan
($133.2 billion) in a initial 10 months of 2012, and is set to
generate some-more over-abundance in a final dual months.

A Reuters research of a information shows that a MOF is likely
to siphon a record high 1.6 trillion yuan into a complement in the
last dual months of this year. Data suggests it injected slightly
lesser amounts during a same duration given 2008, compared to
under 580 billion yuan in 2007 and reduction than 220 billion yuan in
2002 during a same period.

The supervision has designed to record an altogether budgetary
deficit of 800 billion yuan for 2012, implying that a entirety
of a mercantile over-abundance will be plowed behind into a economy,
supplemented by additional necessity spending.

THE AUCTION MECHANISM

The impact of supervision spending on subsidies, refunds and
transfers is formidable to magnitude precisely, though a auction of
deposits combined by supervision revenues is easier to manage.

Such deposits are auctioned for specific durations of time -
usually between 3 and 6 months ? definition regulators and
money marketplace participants can design how prolonged a income will
be in a system.

This year?s auction volume for such deposits is equivalent
to around half of a sum volume of open marketplace operations
conducted by a executive bank, injecting a record 690 billion
yuan into blurb banks so distant this year, adult from 450 billion
yuan in 2011 and 170 billion yuan in 2008.

This means that even as a PBOC has mutated its
open-market operations to concentration roughly exclusively on a usage
of retreat repos with tenors of reduction than one month to manage
the interbank income supply, it has a massive
pool of accessible deposits to tumble behind on if necessary.

The coherence this toolset provides China?s economic
managers has authorised them to conflict calls to revoke a reserve
requirement ratio (RRR) during blurb banks for a third time
this year, even as world?s second-largest economy slowed to its
slowest in 3 years in a third quarter.

This in spin authorised regulators to continue to fight
inflation ? that regulators fear would be aggravated by another
RRR cut given such cuts inject income into a complement that
cannot simply be pulled behind out ? but formulating a liquidity
crisis.

As a result, traders pronounced that short-term income rates for
the benchmark seven-day bond repurchase rate have
remained in gentle domain around or subsequent 3 percent even
as a executive bank has authorised income to empty from a system
through open marketplace operations for a final 3 weeks.

Traders design rates to sojourn fast or even diminution in
most partial of December.

Although 2013?s bill will not be motionless until subsequent March,
if China?s economy continues to recover, mercantile revenues will
likely arise further, giving a Ministry of Finance even more
firepower to change rates.

'Chasing Ice' is a chilling look at melting glaciers: movie review

Director Jeff Orlowski follows the disappearing glaciers of the Arctic.

Award-winning photographer James Balog was a climate change skeptic until he trained his cameras on the inexorably eroding glaciers of the Arctic. Jeff Orlowski?s ?Chasing Ice? documents the intrepid ? some might say borderline crazy ? efforts by Balog and his team to endure the brutal climate and document the catastrophe. The rapid disappearance of ice mountains, filmed over a period of years, is compressed through time-lapse technology into minutes and seconds. The speeded-up effect is harrowing and also, disturbingly, eerily beautiful. Grade: B+ (Rated PG-13 for brief strong language.)

9 Lessons Cancer Has Taught Me About Thanksgiving | Care2 ...

Thanksgiving is one of America?s favorite holidays. No gifts. The beginning of the holiday season. Just family, food, and football. Unfortunately, the holiday?s true meaning ? giving thanks ? sometimes slips right by. I know I haven?t always taken a moment to feel gratitude as much as I could. But not this year.

This Thanksgiving I?m particularly thankful for some things that I?d like to share with you. Eight months ago my wife, Sharon, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I?ve told patients for years that cancer is the scariest word in the English language. But as you would imagine, it hit me much harder as the spouse than the empathy I always feel for my patients. Cancer changes your status in life from being well to being a survivor, that new dimension the American Cancer Society calls any living person with a diagnosis of cancer. It doesn?t mean cured or in remission. It means just what is says?surviving. And surviving provides the basis for hope.

Over the past eight months many things have changed for my family and finally, the future is looking brighter again. Despite the many challenges, I?ve learned some things that aren?t taught well in medical books and I?ve reinforced some things I know intellectually, but now know first hand. I want to share these nine lessons and hope they are useful if you are one of your loved ones faces the all too prevalent cancer.

1. Tell people what?s going on. I don?t mean it?s the first thing you say and I don?t think it?s necessary to tell every acquaintance or the cashier at the supermarket, but it seems that everyone either has cancer or has a family member who has it. According to the American Cancer Society, about 12 million Americans currently have invasive cancer and about one in three people will get cancer sometime during their lifetime. People definitely can relate to it. It?s easier to come out and just say so. Then if you?re tired or don?t want company, people will understand. And if you need help, people will pitch in. Believe me, it?s no shame or sign of weakness.

2. Cancer changes your life and the lives of those around you. They say it takes a village to raise a child. I?d say that when someone in the village gets cancer, it affects the entire village. It affects everyone we hold dear. Life is precious. We all know we won?t live forever, but appropriately, we don?t think about that most of the time. When someone gets cancer, they are a parent or a child or a sibling or all of the above. And all of those relationships are in peril. For us, the outpouring of love from friends and family has been both humbling and a source of strength. Family members have been totally available and really demonstrated their affection. Friends call and check in. They?ve all shown their support in so many ways. It?s very healing and I think it has been healing for them as well. People want to make her happy because she is worthy and as Clayton Christensen writes in his book How Will You Measure Your Life, it deepens their commitment to her and hers to them.

3. Pray and have others pray for you. I?m not sure we need a statistician to tell us whether or not G-d exists, but if you don?t believe in religion and you do believe in math, here is the math theory that states you?re more likely to be correct if you think ?yes.? Almost without fail, when people found out of Sharon?s diagnosis, they offered to pray for her. One of my Catholic friends arranged for his priest to say a prayer weekly and for a special mass for her in a year. The priest did not know that my wife is Jewish, and asked, ?What part of Ireland is she from?? My friend responded, ?From the good part.? One of my mother?s friends who is a nun asked her entire cloister to prayer for Sharon. Every denomination offered their positive thoughts and prayers. These acts of personal giving offer great comfort and support; and both spiritually and mathematically, I believe they are a help.

Reprise : A step towards a civilised society : parents should have the ...

In a week when the United Kingdom's parliament will be considering whether to allow prisoners the right to vote, we make no apology for returning this item to a prominent position on our home page. While thinking of this readers who did not see last week's screening of Michael Winterbottom's film,?Everyday: the art of growing up in real time?about the the experiences of a family when the father is sentenced to a long period in prison, may still do so ?on the Channel 4 iplayer.

Reprise : ?A step towards a civilised society : parents should have the right to vote even if they are prisoners

On May 22nd, 2012, the European Court of Human Rights made a ruling that prisoners in the United Kingdom should have the right to vote in local and general elections. It has given the United Kingdom government 6 months in which to implement the ruling. The court's judgment does allow government ministers to determine which categories of prisoners should be disenfranchised.

Setting aside any feelings there may be about international courts influencing legislation in the United Kingdom, the judgment in our view is one for the good. This website is concerned with the nurturing and parenting of children. Many prisoners are Mums and Dads and continue to care about their children even when they are incarcerated and many prisoners who are parents try very hard, in difficult cicumstances, to keep in touch with their children through correspondence, prison visits and through a number excellent initiatives like for instance,?Storybook Dads.

Prisoners who are parents should retain the right to vote, not only as part of their preparation for rehabilitation to the world outside of prison but also so that they are encouraged to sustain their interest in, and their attachment to, their children through the ballot box. They should be allowed to vote for political representatives who they believe will support new legislation which relates to the lives of their children and their partners living outside the prison walls.

It should go without saying that we sympathise with and support those who have been the victims of a prisoner's crime, including their relatives and friends. A prison sentence can never make the crime that has been committed any less wrong, but it is the method we use as a community - rightly or wrongly - to punish prisoners for certain crimes. They are required to give up periods of their lives in order to make recompense for their crimes. Convicted criminals are taken away from our community and lose their freedom. For the majority of their living hours they are locked up in a cell. They lose the right to see their loved ones except on rare, supervised and time limited occasions. Surely this is punishment enough and prison sentences, if they are to be in the least effective must be proactively rehabilitative. While there may be exceptional instances which would not make it possible or safe, prisoners should feel when they leave prison that they will be accepted back in their home communities and that they will be supported to the extent that they feel they a stand a fair chance of a loving and purposeful future with their children and partners.

It is a sad state of affairs that many of our political leaders, including the United Kingdom prime minister are so set against the European court's judgement. The enfranchisement of prisoners is a symbol of an inclusive community determined to ensure that those who are punished by having their freedom taken away should not feel utterly abandoned but can trust they still have a worth for their families and for our community. Giving prisoners a vote is a step towards achieving a civilised society.
