Israel says it killed jihadist in Gaza

Israel's military identified the man killed as a "senior operative in the global jihad movement" who was involved in planning an attack from Egypt.

Palestinians said that Moamen abu-Daff, known locally as a fundamentalist Islamic Salafi militant, was killed in a raid east of Gaza City that also wounded another man. They did not link the dead man to a specific group.

The Israeli military said that the target was a group of men preparing to fire a rocket into Israel. Palestinian eyewitnesses said they saw militants in the area immediately before the strike.

"Aircraft targeted a terrorist squad that was identified moments before firing rockets at Israel from the northern Gaza Strip. A hit was confirmed, thwarting the rocket fire attempt," a military statement said.

"The aforementioned squad is responsible for the firing of rockets at Israel in the past number of days," it added.

Israeli military sources said on condition of anonymity that abu-Daff had planned and executed the laying of explosives along the Gaza-Israel border fence and "was actively involved in the preparations of the attempted terror attack on the Israel-Egypt border that was thwarted this week".

On Tuesday, Israeli warplanes struck twice at what the military called "global jihad" targets in Gaza, killing at least one Palestinian and wounding 10, Palestinian officials said.

Israel said at the time that both targets were hardline followers of the global jihadist movement, planning cross-border attacks from neighbouring Egypt.

In August, gunmen infiltrated southern Israel from Sinai and carried out a coordinated series of ambushes on buses and cars on route 12, which runs along the Egyptian border some 20km north of the Red Sea resort of Eilat.

The attacks took place over several hours, leaving eight dead and more than 25 wounded.

On December 8, shortly after Israeli troops went on high alert along the border over fears a fresh squad of gunmen had crossed into southern Israel, Israeli aircraft killed two men in Gaza City that the military said had been planning another raid from Sinai, which also borders Gaza.

Palestinian militants fired two rockets at southern Israel on Thursday, after Israeli warplanes attacked "terror sites" inside the Gaza Strip, the army said.

Both fell in open ground without causing injuries or damage.

Early on Thursday morning, Israeli warplanes targeted "terror sites" in central and northern Gaza in retaliation after rockets were fired across the border on Wednesday.

"Israeli air force aircraft targeted a terror activity site in the central Gaza Strip, and a terror tunnel in the northern Gaza Strip," a military statement said, indicating it was a response after five rockets landed in Israel, none of which caused any damage or injuries.

Palestinian security sources said the air strikes hit a training ground used by Islamic Jihad militants near central Gaza and another training ground northeast of Gaza which belonged to Hamas's armed wing, causing no casualties.

On Wednesday, a senior Israeli officer said the military was preparing for a possible large-scale military campaign in Gaza if the Palestinians did not halt their rocket attacks.

"We are preparing and ready for an additional campaign ... to renew the deterrence," Tal Hermoni, commander of the Gaza division's southern brigade, told reporters in remarks widely published in the Israeli press.

Israel's last major operation against Gaza was Operation Cast Lead, a 22-day offensive launched on December 27, 2008 that cost the lives of 1,400 Palestinians - at least half of them civilians - and 13 Israelis, including 10 soldiers.

ESPN's bowl coverage swaps out the telestrator for augmented reality GameView

We dug into ESPN's use of the Xbox 360 and EA Sports games to power its Virtual Playbook segments last year, but in preparation for this round of BCS bowl games it's upgraded the system with a bit of augmented reality. The new GameView system uses a tabletop 70-inch touchscreen LCD, a copy of NCAA Football '12 and four dedicated workstations to blend everything together and create a simulation for viewers to see the analysts move virtual players around the field. It should at least be more interesting than CNN's previous election coverage implementation, although we're mostly wondering when a combo of Kinect, Surface and old school electronic football will bring the experience directly to our living rooms to play around with. Check out the gallery for a few more screens and expect to see this implemented more during the upcoming big time bowl games -- no, there's no secret code Desmond Howard can input to get a national championship game between two college football teams that haven't already played each other, we asked.

Scientists test sick Alaska seals for radiation

Scientists in Alaska are investigating whether local seals are being sickened by radiation from Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant.

Scores of ring seals have washed up on Alaska's Arctic coastline since July, suffering or killed by a mysterious disease marked by bleeding lesions on the hind flippers, irritated skin around the nose and eyes and patchy hair loss on the animals' fur coats.

Biologists at first thought the seals were suffering from a virus, but they have so far been unable to identify one, and tests are now underway to find out if radiation is a factor.

"We recently received samples of seal tissue from diseased animals captured near St. Lawrence Island with a request to examine the material for radioactivity," said John Kelley, Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Marine Science at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

"There is concern expressed by some members of the local communities that there may be some relationship to the Fukushima nuclear reactor's damage," he said.

The results of the tests would not be available for "several weeks," Kelley said.

Water tests have not picked up any evidence of elevated radiation in U.S. Pacific waters since the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan, which caused multiple fuel meltdowns at the Fukushima plant and forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate the surrounding area.

Scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have been seeking the cause of the diseased seals for weeks, but have so far found no answers.

Plans to 'tax the rich' hold risks and rewards for California

Fueled by a backlash against the wealthy, Gov. Jerry Brown and left-leaning groups want voters to tax the rich next November.

Californians have shown strong support for the idea in polls so far, despite the fact that they haven't passed a statewide tax hike since 2004.

Brown said this month "the only tax that's overwhelmingly popular is the tax on wealthier people."

Partisans have feuded for years at the federal level over tax rates for the rich. Republicans argue that tax cuts spur investment and economic growth. Democrats say such "supply-side" theories are unfounded and that lower rates are merely a giveaway to the wealthy. As a state, California has particular considerations.

Chief among them are a fear that taxpayers will flee for lower-cost states, a widening gap between rich and poor, and a volatile income tax stream.

Critics say high-income earners and business owners will leave California for states with no income taxes, such as Nevada or Texas.

"There's nothing more portable than a millionaire and his money," said state Sen. Bob Huff, R-Diamond Bar, the ranking Republican on the Senate budget committee.

Gaunt George Michael says "fortunate to be here" (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? A gaunt and breathless George Michael tearfully thanked his doctors and fans on Friday for seeing him through a "touch and go" battle with pneumonia.

A thin and visibly weak Michael told reporters outside his home in north London that he wasn't supposed to speak for very long and was still recovering from a tracheotomy.

"I got streptococca-something...It's a form of pneumonia and they spent three weeks keeping me alive basically," Michael said of the doctors in the Austrian hospital where the singer has been receiving treatment since he fell ill last month.

"I'm very weak but I feel amazing," he said as he stood in front of a lit-up Christmas tree.

The 48-year-old former Wham! frontman, who went on to pursue a successful solo career, was taken ill in the Austrian capital and diagnosed with severe pneumonia last month.

"It was basically by far the worst month of my life but I'm incredibly, incredibly fortunate to be here," he said. "If I wasn't spiritual enough before the last four, five weeks then I certainly am now."

British press reports said that members of his family had travelled to be by his side at Vienna General Hospital, but Michael said he had played down reports of his illness during his hospital stay for the sake of his fans.

"I didn't want to worry my fans too much and I'm really sorry that I couldn't contact them in any way before now but I was really not in any state to," he said.

Michael had been in the middle of a European tour when he became ill and was forced to cancel a string of dates but, speaking for the first time since he fell ill, he promised to play to every fan who had bought a ticket.

He added that he also wanted to hold a special show for the Austrian doctors who treated him.

"I've spent the last 10 days since I woke up literally thanking people for saving my life, which is something I've never had to do before and never want to have to do again," he said, choking back the tears.

Asked if the experience had changed his life, he said: "Absolutely. I'm a new man."

After joking that he hoped reporters had enjoyed their mince pies, Michael said he couldn't speak any more because he was trying to get over the tracheotomy.

Born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, Michael burst on to the British pop scene in the early 80s as the lead singer of Wham!, which had a string of catchy hits including "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" and "Last Christmas."

He also found success as a solo artist with chart-toppers like "Careless Whisper" and "A Different Corner," and it was only a matter of time before he struck out alone.

His rich vein continued with the 1987 No. 1 "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" in which he performed with Aretha Franklin, one of his favorite artists.

The same year he released "Faith," an album which spawned a string of hit singles including "I Want Your Sex," "Faith" and "Father Figure" and earned the singer a Grammy.

It was his best-selling album, although he did top charts around the world with subsequent releases, enjoyed estimated career sales of 100 million records and amassed a personal fortune of 90 million pounds ($141 million).

When he was not hitting the airwaves with his music, Michael's personal life was regularly in the headlines, most notably in 1998 when he was arrested in California for "engaging in a lewd act" in a public toilet.

After the incident he spoke openly about his homosexuality, and courted controversy again by speaking out against the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Michael told Reuters in a 2005 interview that he was withdrawing from public life, but the following year he launched his first tour in 15 years.

He had a string of run-ins with British police for possession of narcotics, and was given a jail sentence last year for driving under the influence of cannabis.

Michael opened what was to be his final tour in Prague in August.

iPhone 5 Release and Anobit Acquisition by Apple Connected?

Apple has bought Anobit, a maker of flash storage technology based in Israel, for a reported $500 million, according to the Calcalist financial daily.

The?acquisition?was welcomed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who tweeted: "Welcome to Israel, Apple Inc. on your 1st acquisition here. I'm certain that you'll benefit from the fruit of the Israeli knowledge."

Anobit has developed a chip that boosts flash drive performance through data signal processing.

It is believed?that?Apple's acquisition is related to the iPhone 5, which?might get a third quarter of 2012 release date. The technology from Anobit can help Apple increase and enhance the memory volume and performance of the future smartphone.

Like us on Facebook

In addition, mobile products such as the iPhone need as much storage in as little space as possible, which is making flash?a necessity in mobile electronics.?Anobit's technology?will help?Apple?further improve flash, which in turn will allow the design to be slimmed down.

One of the most expensive pieces in Apple's products is the flash storage. By acquiring Anobit, Apple will be in a position to cut down this cost. Again Anobit specializes in Memory Signal Processing, which makes flash memory more reliable and efficient.

Anobit's technology also is expected?to improve?the media browsing experience for?users.

In Memoriam: Nate Dogg, Heavy D Among Stars We Lost In 2011

MTV News remembers 'Jackass' daredevil Ryan Dunn, Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr and Cali Swag District's M-Bone, among others.

This year we lost some of our brightest stars: artists that spanned the genres of rock, hip-hop and pop, as well as TV and film. They were at different stages in their careers — some just starting to rise, others already legends — but all left a distinct mark on pop culture, and their deaths affected us deeply.

Beloved hip-hop icons Nate Dogg and Heavy D influenced the generations of artists who followed them. Nate (born Nathaniel Hale) died at age 41 after suffering several health setbacks related to a stroke. One of the key players in the birth of the West Coast G-Funk sound, the crooner's silky smooth vocals touched classic tracks from Snoop Dogg and Warren G to 50 Cent and Ludacris. Fun-loving Heavy D, a major force in the New Jack Swing era, had hits with songs like "We Found Love" and "Nuttin' But Love," but he had also branched out into film and theater. He was 44 when he died this past fall.

Photos: The celebrities gone too soon in 2011.

We lost Mike Starr, former bassist for the groundbreaking Seattle grunge band Alice in Chains. Like Amy Winehouse, who also died this year at the age of 27, Starr's talent was often overshadowed by dependency on alcohol and drugs.

Gun violence claimed the life of 22-year-old Montae Talbert, the Cali Swag District dancer otherwise known as M-Bone. And Australian actor Andy Whitfield, who got his big break when he was cast as the lead in the Starz TV series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," was 39 when he succumbed to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Finally, the MTV family mourned the death of "Jackass" daredevil and "Viva La Bam" star Ryan Dunn. The 34-year-old died on a rural Pennsylvania road along with his 30-year-old passenger, Zachary Hartwell, when their car slammed into a guardrail and caught fire.

Share your memories of those we lost this year in the comments below.

MTV continues our Best of 2011 coverage by looking back at the biggest pop-culture stories of the year. As we count down the newsmakers that mattered to you most, also check out our Best Artists, Best Songs, Best MTV Live Performances and Best EDM Artists of 2011.

Is MyRobots.com the 'Facebook for Robots?' Verdict: Maybe

Yesterday saw the launch of a website called MyRobots.com, which aims to be a sort of social network and cloud communications system for consumer robots and other "smart" household objects. It's a great idea, but like most great ideas, it may come with a catch.

The idea behind MyRobots is to create a social network where robots can communicate with you and with each other. Just like Facebook, your robots get their very own profile (created by you unless your robot is a genius) and the ability to update their statuses whenever they feel like it. Unlike Facebook, these status updates will be useful information, like "I'm almost out of batteries" or "my dust bin is full" or "help the cat has me cornered, requesting authorization to deploy laser cannons."

But it gets even better than anti-cat laser cannons. If both robots?and stationary objects can use this service (and that's the plan), the possibilities are virtually endless. For example, if you leave your fridge open and then leave the house for the day, the fridge could ask your robot vacuum to drive over and push it closed. Or maybe you've just posted a bunch of wild party pics to your Facebook account, which could clue your robovac in to the fact that it should probably not start trying to clean up at 7 a.m. the next morning.?Of course, it's already possible to enable a variety of robots (and other household devices) to communicate via existing social networks like Facebook and Twitter and whatnot to tell you (and the rest of the world) how they're doing, but MyRobots would allow a much greater degree of interactivity.

The primary difference between MyRobots.com and a site like Facebook, Twitter, or Google Plus is that MyRobots is run by a company that wants to sell you robots: RobotShop.com. The potential issue, then, is that there could be some inherent conflict since the owner of this social network is also trying to sell you the hardware that runs on the social network, and they're already evaluating partnership options with manufacturers. In the short term, though, RobotShop is hoping to make money through a couple of web-based services, specifically:

Cloud Services- At the moment, access to the MyRobots cloud data engine is free, but that's only going to last for a limited time. After that, you'll need to buy tokens for an unspecified amount of (real) money. Each one of your robots needs one token per month of access.

Applications- Developers can use the MyRobots service to develop, sell, and support cloud-based applications. RobotShop keeps 25% of all transactions.

So is this really the Facebook of robots? I'm not sure. I definitely like the idea, but it's important to keep in mind that this is someone's business, and not just a robot social network for the sake of having a robot social network. This may make it better, since it gives RobotShop more resources to work with. It also may make it worse, because the long-term bottom line is that RobotShop is probably going to do what's profitable, and that may not necessarily be what you're looking for (or currently expecting).?Either way, if you choose to participate (and you want to take advantage of the cloud and apps), you'll be tying yourself in to this whole token thing, RobotShop's vision (as opposed to a pure community-driven vision), and whatever strings end up getting attached.

Again, I like this idea, and I certainly hope the MyRobots becomes a success. It's just important to know all the details of what you're getting into before you (or your robot) invest time (and eventually money) into an idea like this.

MPs warn over solar panel subsidy

Planned government changes to subsidies on solar power may deal the industry a "fatal blow", two parliamentary committees are warning.

The Environmental Audit Committee and Energy and Climate Change Committee say ministers are right to make changes, but are doing so "clumsily".

Government plans include restricting access to solar subsidies to houses meeting energy efficiency standards.

Thousands of solar industry jobs could be at risk, the committees warn.

On Wednesday, a group of companies and environmental groups won a legal judgement against one of the changes.

Central to their campaign was the Department of Energy and Climate Change's (Decc) plan to halve abruptly the level of feed-in tariff (FiT) that small-scale solar installations attract, from 43p per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to 21p.

The FiTs are paid by energy companies to householders and communities to subsidise solar electricity generation.

This will have a devastating effect on hundreds of solar companies and small building firms installing these panels across the country?

End Quote Joan Walley MP EAC

It had been expected that the new tariff would come into effect from 1 April; but in October, the government said it would apply to anyone installing their solar panels after 12 December.

The High Court ruled that changing the tariffs before the end of an official consultation period was "legally flawed".

The two committees said ministers were right to cut the tariffs - but not in the way they did.

"There is no question that solar subsidies needed to be urgently reduced, but the government has handled this clumsily," said Tim Yeo, chairman of the Energy and Climate Change Committee.

"Ministers should have spotted the solar 'gold rush' much earlier. That way subsidy levels could have been reduced in a more orderly way without delivering such a shock to the industry."

The MPs described the quick tariff change as "panicky", and said it "smacks of retrospective regulation, which undermines confidence in the government's management of other energy policies".

The root cause is solar panels have proved far more popular than the government suspected when it introduced the FiT in April last year.

The cost of installing them has fallen faster than anticipated, by 30% since the scheme began. And with wholesale gas prices pushing up the cost of electricity from the grid, demand for solar panels rocketed

As a result, about 90% of the funds that the government wanted to be spent during the four-year FiT programme has already been allocated.

Industry concerns

Among the government's other proposals are changing the criteria for eligibility for FiTs.

The consultation suggests that houses should have to meet insulation standards before they qualify - for example, insisting that it should have an Energy Performance Certificate C rating at least.

Government data suggest this would require 86% of homes to get an upgrade before becoming eligible. In most cases this would cost about ?5,600, but could be much more expensive.

For a semi-detached house with solid walls, the bill could be up to ?14,000 - and with solar panel installation coming in at an average of ?9,000, the committees fear a huge impact on uptake, potentially dealing the industry a "fatal blow".

"The government is right to encourage people to focus on saving energy before fitting solar panels, but these proposals will require most households to spend thousands of pounds on extra insulation before they even purchase the panels," said Joan Walley, who chairs the Environmental Audit Committee.

"This will stop nine out of 10 installations from going ahead, which will have a devastating effect on hundreds of solar companies and small building firms installing these panels across the country."

The Solar Trade Association, which represents more than 450 companies in the field, has surveyed industry chiefs and estimates that a third of companies could close as a result of the proposed changes.

Its chairman, Howard Johns, welcomed the committees' report.

"We are particularly pleased the committees have urged Decc to abandon the more extreme energy efficiency eligibility proposals, which could stamp out the UK solar market next year," he said.

"What is missing, however, is recognition that solar can deliver nothing less than an energy revolution at a cost to households lower than, for example, the levy imposed by wind energy."

A Decc spokesman said the report would be considered fully, but believed the changes were needed.

"We appreciate the uncertainty faced because of the changes we have proposed to the FiT scheme, but we believe solar projects will still be an attractive investment," he told BBC News.

But shadow energy and climate change secretary Caroline Flint described the report as a "damning indictment" of a government that was "out of touch".

"The government's chaotic mismanagement has put thousands of jobs and businesses in the solar industry in jeopardy, undermined confidence and investment in the whole energy sector and gives lie to the government's promise to be the 'greenest government ever'," she said.

The government sees solar playing a small role in the coming decade, certainly much smaller than wind.

But in a recent YouGov opinion survey, it emerged as the most popular energy technology, with 74% of respondents wanting the government to use more than it does at present.

The figure for wind was 56%. Only 16% wanted the use of coal to increase, while 43% preferred a reduction.

Russia protests and other 2011 uprisings: A year of yearning for clean government

On Dec. 24, tens of thousands of Russians plan to protest again over election fraud and other official corruption. The event will bookend a remarkable year of efforts, from China to India to Brazil, to rein in graft in high places.

At the risk of writing history too early, 2011 may well be remembered as a year in which demands for honesty in public life popped up around the world like desert flowers after a rain.

Tunisia was the first bud, with protests that spawned the Arab Spring and its cry for clean, representative government. Movements to curb official corruption also shot up in Brazil, Russia, India, and China ? the BRIC countries.

This Saturday, in what may be the year?s final big challenge to graft in high places, tens of thousands of Russians plan to hit the streets again, braving the arctic cold and a chilly response from the Kremlin.

Most of these protesters are middle-class urbanites with Internet access ? all still rare for the masses. But even this dissenting pro-democracy elite has managed to force pledges of political reform as a result of their protests in many cities on Dec. 10.

That earlier gathering was triggered by clear evidence of fraud in Dec. 4 elections for Russia?s parliament. But it was also fueled by opposition blogger Aleksei Navalny giving an apt phrase to the ruling United Russia party that backs Vladimir Putin: a ?party of swindlers and thieves.?

For now, the Kremlin only talks of reform. The outgoing president, Dmitry Medvedev, proposed several ideas Thursday to the new (and illegitimate) parliament: forced disclosure of public officials? personal income, direct election of provincial governors, and creation of an independent television station.

He noted how many government contracts are granted to private businesses with family ties to public workers. ?The number of such cases in our country is enormous,? he said. Recent research shows that the average bribe in Russia has gone up more than sixfold, reaching $10,000.

Without the cleansing effect of transparent democracy, Russia?s endemic corruption may stall its economic growth.

Even if Mr. Medvedev?s reforms are enacted, they fall short of the protesters? call for a new election.

This Saturday?s protests will likely be just a warm-up for those timed for next March?s presidential election. Prime Minister (and former president) Putin has all but eliminated any serious opposition to his winning that contest.

Rights council objects to Khodorkovsky verdict (AP)

MOSCOW ? A Russian human rights council recommended Wednesday that prosecutors take action to get former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky's conviction overturned.

Khodorkovsky has been imprisoned since his arrest in 2003 on charges widely seen as punishment for challenging Vladimir Putin, who was president at the time. A Moscow court last December found him guilty of embezzlement in a second case and ruled to keep him behind bars until 2016.

The rights council under President Dmitry Medvedev issued a report pointing to "fundamental violations" in Khodorkovsky's second trial, state news agencies reported. The council urged the prosecutor general to petition to get the verdict annulled and for investigators to review the case.

Tamara Morshchakova, a council member and a former Constitutional Court judge, told Russian news agencies that authors of the report found "no evidence or substance behind the accusations of embezzlement" leveled at Khodorkovsky in the second case.

Morshchakova described the verdict as "fictitious."

The council's decisions are not binding. The council, staffed with respected public figures, has given voice to an array of public concerns and has pushed authorities to investigate allegations of abuse and violations of the law, but its recommendations have rarely yielded tangible results.

Good Reads: Remembrances of Vaclav Havel, Christopher Hitchens, and Kim Jong-il (video)

The passing of two great writers, Havel and Hitchens, may not cause currencies to fluctuate or armies to go on standby as Kim Jong-il's death has today. But the influence of their words will live on.

One of the benefits of being a rather famous writer is that when you do ?go gentle in that good night,? all your friends, who are also rather famous writers, write stories about you. The stories may be true or false, funny or moving, but they will be well-written.

The magazines this week are full of tributes and remembrances of two writers who passed on in the past few days, and who will be missed: Vaclav Havel, the playwright-turned-president of the Czech Republic, and Christopher Hitchens, the liberal Brit who didn?t mind offending liberal Americans, repeatedly.

Their passing may not cause currencies to fluctuate or neighboring armies to be put on standby, as North Korean President Kim Jong-il?s death today has.?But the melody of their words continues on long after their instruments go silent.?

It?s not hard to understand the appeal of a man like Vaclav Havel. He is the man who experienced true revenge against a totalitarian regime, using the most brutal weapon: his humor. He was a playwright, a novelist, and an activist by accident. He wrote bizarre stories about the everyday absurdities of a totalitarian regime that jailed him, and when that regime lost its outside funding and crumbled, he feasted with rock stars and poets, and, oddly, became president.

To his credit, Havel was always a better writer than he was a politician. But he steered his country well enough in its voyage from a Soviet satellite to an independent partner in a larger Europe.

In this week?s New Yorker, I love this observation from David Remnick:

Even surrounded by the pomp of his office, Havel retained to the end an impish smile, a constant acknowledgement that his power was both an immense responsibility and an equally immense cosmic joke. I came to the Castle, in 2003, to talk with him?for a Profile?just as he was preparing to leave power. He gave me as a gift a marvelous book of photographs portraying his life as an artist and politician. He signed it to my wife, who had covered the 1989 revolution in Prague with me, in lime-green marker and then drew a little heart, in red, next to his signature. I have a hard time imagining any other president goofing around like that.

Less powerful, perhaps, but equally complex is the writer Christopher Hitchens, a man who somehow survived on freelance writing, contribution to a number of magazines, including Vanity Fair, the Nation, Slate, the Atlantic, and the New York Times Book Review.

Foreign policy wonks will always remember Hitchens for his vigorous lobbying for war against Iraq, a cause he both regretted and remained unapologetic about.

?To say one had no regrets would be abnormally unreflective, I think,? Hitchens told the BBC?s Jeremy Paxman in 2010. But while he recognized the war's effect on the Iraqi population, including the deaths of an estimated 100,000 civilians, he said that the goal of removing Saddam Hussein from power was the only morally correct decision. ?I finally found I couldn?t support any policy that involved the continuation of Saddam Hussein in power? So to that extent, I?m not apologetic.?

Graydon Carter, the editor of Vanity Fair, wrote a remembrance of Hitchens that may be excruciating to ordinary people, but is the ultimate compliment to a true reporter.

There was no subject too big or too small for Christopher. Over the past two decades he traveled to just about every hot spot you can think of. He?d also subject himself to any manner of humiliation or discomfort in the name of his column. I once sent him out on a mission to break the most niggling laws still on the books in New York City. One such decree forbade riding a bicycle with your feet off the pedals. The photograph that ran with the column, of Christopher sailing a small bike through Central Park with his legs in the air, looked like something out of the Moscow Circus.?

Which brings us to the Dear Leader. We may never know whether Kim Jong-il rode a bike with his legs in the air. We may never know if he had a whimsical side, poking fun at himself as he pushed his navy into open battles with South Korea, urged his people to eat grass when rice became unavailable, or played nuclear brinksmanship with the West.

Someday soon, there will be a giant stone statue in Pyongyang marking the life of Kim Jong-il. But Vaclav Havel and Christopher Hitchens will live on in their words.?

Mixed emotions for Iraq vets in the White House (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Tanya Bradsher felt a rush of relief each morning when the updates came in letting her know how many U.S. troops were left in Iraq.

Each time the number ticked closer to zero, it meant more of her fellow veterans had made their final trip out of Iraq safely. Her biggest fear was that the remaining U.S. troops would get hit on their way out. She would hold her breath and think, "today is a good day, tomorrow hopefully will be a good day."

Sunday was the day Bradsher, a lieutenant colonel in the Army, had been waiting for. The last of all U.S. troops in Iraq safely crossed the border into Kuwait, bringing the divisive war to a close.

Bradsher, a lieutenant colonel in the Army, witnessed the war's final days from a unique vantage point. The soft-spoken mother of three is one of several Iraq war veterans now working in the White House, helping President Barack Obama bring the war that defined them to a close.

In transitioning from the battlefield to the White House, they have given the war a face and voice in West Wing, serving as a constant reminder that, for a small percentage of Americans, the long, divisive conflict has also been a matter of life and death.

"It's a bit of a gut check on everything you say and do about the policy of the war and the politics of it," said Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser for strategic communication.

The end of the nearly nine-year war marked a promise fulfilled for Obama, who took office pledging to end the conflict. Mindful of the politics of war, some of the veterans who now work for Obama are careful not to draw a direct connection between the president's positions on the Iraq war and their decision to work for his administration.

Still, Steve Miska, Obama's director of Iraq policy, said he had "an overwhelming sense of relief" when the president announced that the war was coming to a close. An Army lieutenant colonel and father of two, Miska did three tours of duty in Iraq, including a 16-month stint in Baghdad that spanned the height of the sectarian violence there.

"My goal was that my generation finish this war so that my son, who is thinking about what he's going to do in college in two years, would not have to complete it with his generation," he said.

Like many veterans of the unpopular war, the military's departure from Iraq has stirred mixed emotions for the veterans in the White House. It's surreal, they say. Bittersweet. A moment of contemplation.

"You go back to your personal recollections of people maybe you know that were lost in battle, to their families, and to the guys who came back very much changed. And I think most people do come back changed in some way," said Matt Flavin, who joined the military after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and served in Iraq from 2005 to 2006, working in Baghdad and Ramadi.

Flavin now serves as director of the White House office on veterans and wounded warrior policy, focusing on how the administration can assist the veterans returning home from Iraq, as well as Afghanistan.

With no military background himself, Obama has often sought the guidance of veterans like Flavin, Miska and Bradsher, who serves as a spokeswoman for the National Security Council. Before delivering a speech last week at North Carolina's Fort Bragg, Obama had the Iraq veterans review the remarks he planned to deliver to service members and their families.

Darienne Page, an Army veteran now working in the White House on veterans and wounded warrior outreach, traveled with the president to Fort Bragg. The war's finality hit home for her on that trip, she said, when she met a young service member who asked her to thank the president for allowing him to spend his first Christmas home with his family in four years.

"To be able to give that to someone and to know that you're responsible for making sure that this guy is home for the holidays, there honestly is no better feeling in the world," said Page, who deployed to Iraq in 2003.

Like the president, the Iraq veterans in the White House do not speak about the war as a mission accomplished. They are candid about the challenges Iraq still faces, yet proud of the work they did there: clearing insurgent strongholds, helping bring down the levels of violence, and restoring basic services for the Iraqi people.

"Iraq is not a perfect place," Flavin said. "Hopefully it will get closer to the ideal, but it's not there yet and maybe it never will be. But based on our tremendous sacrifice, I do think we're leaving the country in a better place."

Each veteran has a vision for Iraq's future: A stable, democratic government. Safe and vibrant cities. A place where they could one day return with their families to visit their Iraqi friends.

But for now, with all U.S. troops having left Iraq, their thoughts are increasingly with the families of the nearly 4,500 Americans killed in war and making sure they know a simple truth.

"Their sacrifices really were worth it," Bradsher said.

Discover 4Q profit leaps 46 pct as card use rises (AP)

NEW YORK ? Shoppers spent more with Discover cards as the holiday shopping season began, helping lift the credit card company's fiscal fourth quarter profit 46 percent.

Discover Financial Services said Thursday that sales volume on its namesake cards rose 8 percent to $25.03 billion in the quarter. The total number of transactions Discover's networks processed rose 5 percent.

At the same time, customer payment habits improved, and rates of late payments and defaults fell. That enabled the company to release some of its reserves set aside to cover unpaid balances, which also helped improve results.

Reflecting a broader trend across the credit card industry, the Riverwoods, Ill.-based company said the number of customers paying off their card balances each month increased.

Keefe, Bruyette and Woods analyst Sanjay Sakhrani noted that economic shakeout of the last few years has left credit cards in the hands of more affluent consumers who are better able to pay their bills in full each month, while those with lower credit scores and presumably less ability to pay are now less likely to use credit.

For the three months ended Nov. 30, Discover posted net income available to common shareholders of $508 million, or 95 cents per share, compared with $347 million, or 64 cents per share in the year-ago period.

The number of outstanding shares dropped 3 percent, which has the effect of boosting per-share results.

Revenue rose 13 percent to $1.81 billion from $1.6 billion last year.

Analysts, on average, were expecting earnings of 89 cents per share on $1.81 billion in revenue, according to a survey by FactSet.

Growth in the company's private student loan and direct banking businesses provided added boosts during the quarter. During the period, Discover purchased an additional $2.4 billion in student loans.

Analyst Chris Brendler of Stifel Nicolaus said called the results "impressive," and pointed to the growth in student loans and also private loans made by Discover Bank as positive. "It was a good quarter," he said.

Discover said the results enabled it to raise its dividend by 67 percent to 10 cents from 6 cents. The dividend is payable Jan. 19 to shareholders of record as of Dec. 29.

In morning trading, Discover shares slipped 22 cents, to $23.60. The stock has traded between $17.86 and $27.92 in the past 52 weeks, and closed Wednesday up about 30 percent since the start of the year.

'Witches' arrested over extortion for spells

By The Associated Press

BUCHAREST, Romania - Two self-professed witches were detained in Romania on blackmail and extortion charges on Wednesday in a high-profile case involving a TV star and reportedly other public figures.

Police spokesman Christian Ciocan said the two women ? who go by the single names of Melissa and Vanessa ? approached public figures promising to help them overcome work or love difficulties, and help them break curses.

He said the women initially charged very little, but then, as their victims became hooked on their services, increased their prices.

Ciocan cited one case where the victim ? who later publicly identified herself as TV personality Oana Zavoranu ? handed over euro450,000 (US$593,000) in cash and property in exchange for spells.

He said the witches practiced voodoo, and sacrificed animals in graveyards and near rivers, claiming this would protect Zavoranu from her mother and in-laws who had put a curse on her.

The witches, however, claim Zavoranu is being vengeful because she asked them to cast a spell on her mother that would kill her, but the mother is still alive.

The ex-wife of businessman Cristi Borcea, one of two owners of Romanian football team Dinamo Bucharest, was also cited as a victim, but she has neither confirmed or denied the case.

Ciocan said if the victims tried to cease payment, the two women would threaten to put a spell on them, or disclose details of their personal lives.

A court ruled Melissa and Vanessa will be released later Wednesday, awaiting trial.

Many people believe in witchcraft in Romania. President Traian Basescu and his aides have been known to wear purple on certain days, supposedly to ward off evil.

Romania has recently been trying to introduce legislation to limit witchcraft. This month, lawmaker Nicolae Paun, who represents the Roma, or Gypsies, in Parliament, said legislation must be enacted to stop what he called "backward practices."

Most self-professed witches in Romania are Roma.

Time Travel, Pseudo-Science; a delightful romp

17 June 1959
Martin Dulcate
Department of Archaeology, Kings College
New York

The man read the piece of paper once again and frowned. He had read it over and over again in the hopes that perhaps it would suddenly change into something that actually made sense. Those in charge had the object checked by a metallurgist, a nuclear physicist and an aeronautical engineer. All the men were the best in their respective fields. These men of science were revered and held countless awards and honours and yet, they all reached the same conclusion; the same fantastical conclusion. Doctor Martin Dulcate read the report titled SP 133.7.8 once more noticed the Triple Black security clearance and Original Copy stamped on the header and realised only five people knew of it.

The body of the memo was comprised of four parts. The first was an elemental composition of the object; 13% Carbon, 8% Cobalt-Aluminium Alloy and 3% Copper. The remainder of the composition was speculative and completely undefinable, Martin Frowned and moved on. Next came the the mathematics accompanying the breakdown of radiation and the proof of nuclear origin. Not surprising as they had split the atom over five years ago but as the maths showed it would have taken the radiation of nine-hundred of their bombs and they, to date only possessed thirteen. Section three was a simple sentence fragment: Unknown origin, possible source of propulsion or engine component. Data inconclusive. The last part was Dulcate's own writing. Being an Archaeologist it was surprising to be included in the few chosen to know and participate in the Yorkshire project; the British attempt at Atomic Fission. This was achieved in 1951 and secured the power of the British Communal Expanse (BCE).

Dulcate read his words, so carefully chosen at the time and sighed. The object is cylindrical measuring 244 millimetres at the length, 71 millimetres at the breadth and weighs 1088 grams, silver in colour, 4 degrees centigrade warmer than room temperature. The object was discovered in 1946 contained in the tomb of General Zachary Taylor after he was hastily buried with it after his death in 1846, caused by the object itself. It is the professional opinion of of I, Doctor Martin Dulcate, the object is not relative to other artefacts discovered within the tomb.

The man shook a Chesterfield cigarette from a crumpled pack and placed it in his mouth. He retrieved his Cartier lighter from his vest pocket and lit the cigarette then touched the flame to the memo. The paper caught fire, crinkled black at the corner then Doctor Dulcate tossed the burning leaf of paper in his wire-waste bin and watched it burn. Martin ashed his cigarette, pulled out his Webley revolver, placed the barrel in his mouth and pulled the trigger.

***

This story will take place in the modern day in various locales. The timeline as we know it is skewed, the details will be contained in the actual roleplay. The gist of the story is after a body of a woman washes up and is discovered to posses some strange characteristics in her blood a haematologist is hired by a secretive organisation leading the scientist to enlist help of other colleagues. A dark history is uncovered and puts the entire team in danger. The canister is held in a catalogued but abandoned building that occupies three time periods; modern day, 1951 and 2189. Most of the players will be in the modern period but there will one working in 1951 on the Yorkshire Project which will progress the story in the modern day,as the old documents are discovered leading the team to the next objective.

If this sounds interesting I welcome all takers as long as you hold at least a moderate writing capability.

Survey: 1 in 4 US women victims of severe violence

ATLANTA (AP) ? It's a startling number: 1 in 4 women surveyed by the government say they were violently attacked by their husbands or boyfriends.

Experts in domestic violence don't find it too surprising, although some aspects of the survey may have led to higher numbers than are sometimes reported.

Even so, a government official who oversaw the research called the results "astounding."

"It's the first time we've had this kind of estimate" on the prevalence of intimate partner violence, said Linda Degutis of the centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The survey, released by the CDC Wednesday, marks the beginning of a new annual project to look at how many women say they've been abused.

One expert called the new report's estimate on rape and attempted rape "extremely high" ? with 1 in 5 women saying they were victims. About half of those cases involved intimate partners. No documentation was sought to verify the women's claims, which were made anonymously.

But advocates say the new rape numbers are plausible.

"It's a major problem that often is under-estimated and over-looked," said Linda James, director of health for Futures Without Violence, a San Francisco-based organization that advocates against domestic abuse.

The CDC report is based on a randomized telephone survey of about 9,000 women.

Among the findings:

? As many as 29 million women say they have suffered severe and frightening physical violence from a boyfriend, spouse or other intimate partner. That includes being choked, beaten, stabbed, shot, punched, slammed against something or hurt by hair-pulling.

? That number grows to 36 million if slapping, pushing and shoving are counted.

? Almost half of the women who reported rape or attempted rape said it happened when they were 17 or younger.

Several of the CDC numbers are higher than those of other sources. For example, the CDC study suggests that 1.3 million women have suffered rape, attempted rape or had sex forced on them in the previous year. That statistic is more than seven times greater than what was reported by a Department of Justice household survey conducted last year.

There may be several reasons for the differences, including how the surveys were done, who chose to participate and how "rape" and other types of assault were defined or interpreted, said Shannan Catalano, a statistician with the Bureau of Justice Statistics.
